State provided Medicaid has for years provided healthcare coverage for the poor...SCHIP was aimed at extending that coverage to the lower middle income people who didn't quailfy for Medicaid (earned too much) but had trouble paying for private coverage ($500 - $1000 per month /-).
BUT, this issue has regrettably become so politicized that it has no chance to move forward now. My understanding is that the Democrats included in it a provision that would allow future administrations (read: Hillary) to change the qualifying income level...and one state (that's what the 'S" stands for), New York, proposed c. $83,000 for a family of four. That could mean that many who already have medical coverage at modest cost could immediately drop it in favor of the federally subsidized plan, potentially (and unpredictably) inflating costs enormously.
Our taxes are lower than many developed countries, a major reason being that US industry historically has borne the cost of employee healthcare insurance. That is eroding as hc costs skyrocket while US industry's international competitivness wanes. The byproduct of that dynamic is a growing sector of the public without healthcare insurance...hence this S CHIP proposal.
Actually, the proposed income limit was more like $60,000, the New York proposal having been denied...but people don't know that...information is not clear to the public.
The prospect that the Dems could/would raise it in the future lead to the Republican veto just a few days ago.

I know I will draw ire on this, but I still think the bill was crap.
I don't think that anyone likes to see injured children. Republicans would not revel in the fact that they are laying in the hospital, and without coverage they might be dead. Would it be any different if it were a single 30 year old person that couldn't afford insurance, but made a little too much to qualify for the program?
If the US were to socialize medical coverage a lot of hospitals would have to be built and staffed. The costs would be astronomical. The tax rate would have to be hiked quite a bit. The US public would not stand to see a 10-15% tax increase. That would be political suicide.
There would have to be a lot of issues contained in order to even think about this program. I started to go into them, but realized I could be here a long time discussing them. Lawsuit settlements, drug prices, liability coverages, etc.........Imagine the amount of increased lawsuits that would result if national coverage became a reality. The court system would be tied up.
I don't agree with the bill because the lower middle class is being taken care of. What about the middle and upper middle class? You don't think the insurance premiums of $500-$1000 a month doesn't sting? There are quite a few places you can go, make good money, but have mediocre insurance.
Rather than see the lower class get the benefits, I would be more apt to agree to the government subsidizing insurance payments. This would mean that the lower class people would have to get a job. If the company doesn't offer benefits then they need to go out and get private insurance, but the goverment offers a set rate subsidy based on earnings.
Even if a company does offer insurance the government could subsidize the payments for everyone.
The catch here is no job, no insurance, unless the person qualifies for medical leave and the sort.
I don't think that any party disagrees that there is a serious reform need in the healthcare industry.

In all honesty, I usually come to these Glumbert threads to take a bit of a time-out; yesterday, was another story. It was a bad, bad, BAD day all-round (mostly work-related). Podman, you at least must see Pulp Fiction. Part of our culture now. Although I shouldn't talk. Hardly watch any movies these days. They all seem to be crap. Just remakes of remakes of old plot lines(Ya I know, wa wa wa)
Bill - Well maybe I will get netflix one of these days. I don't have cable or a dish , just the rabbit ears on the old TV, and such movies don't make it to network, or if they do they are comically censored by the nanny state.
This exhibit is the epitomy of the most disgusting part of religious freedom. Whatever you believe there is no justiifcation to allow a six year old child to participate in an event like this.

I got an account, so I could comment on this. This precious little boy has a lot to say. He doesn't say the same thing over and over.. For six years old, he has quite a vocabulary. Yes, his parents taught him the Bible, but the convictions of his heart seem truly genuine. What's disgusting, is the foul language that is used here to post comments.
