Now then I doubt they were poorly trained just poorly executed. First and foremost, what is taught in a reputable police academy; Under no circumstances do shit when a camera is pointed at you. Secondly, if there is no camera watching and only a witness or 2, tazer the bastid when he has both hands cuffed. This is for shits and giggles. If a camera is pointed at you wait until you get him in the police car and then you tazer him.
Now then they need a refresher in the etiquette of handling a prisoner.
I have a HUGE problem with what I just saw. H-U-G-E.
And here's why:
This young fellow was standing at a microphone, asking a question/making a statement, to Sen. Kerry. He was NOT making threats of kind, either subtle or overt; sure, he was somewhat animated, but no big whoop. He did not display any physical movement or gesture, which could be interpreted as hostile or threatening; he did not have anything in his hands which could be construed as a weapon (just papers). So, I'm aghast at why these officers moved in on him IN THE FIRST PLACE. GRanted, this fellow didn't help his own cause when he became indignant (and rightfully so) and started to resist; in the officers' minds, this only played into their hands, and they were able to further justify an escalation in their actions. Plus, I STILL couldn't reconcile what happened next: several officers on top of this man, in the process of cuffing him...and they STILL TASERED HIM??? In front of a whole auditorium?? Rules governing Tasers, ASP batons, pepper spray and even sidearms are quite clear: the first three are defensive in nature, and intended to subdue a suspect, so that he will be controlled/contained; the last one is the lethal option (and is THE last resort) : permanent threat elimination.
Here's the bottom line:
If I see several officers on top of ONE suspect, on the ground, and one of those officers STILL has to take a TASER out, and zap him...I'd be asking for resignations. Clearly, someone in this case got a little carried away. I think the officer that actually TASED him even grinned for the audience. Look at it again.
Now, I CANNOT believe what I am about say (gulps); Here goes:
This reminds me of the time, when then-Sec. of Defence Rumsfeld was speaking in front of a crowd, and taking questions. Well, one fellow gets up, and starts asking him a pile of questions about the WMD's, and even accuses him lying! So guess what? Who wouldn't act like that if you were suddenly being pounced on and cuffed for no clear, apparent reason. Basically anyone could get arrested- resist, act aggressive, struggle then the police would have a clear excuse to make the arrest. Citizens on patrol are only leash hounds though compared to what i've seen.

Umm, what were they arresting him for? If he made undue comments (which he did not) then the procedure would have been to cut the mike and get him out of the auditorium, end of story. Second...if you have ever attended a speaker's event at a college campus, you know they teeter on the edge of chaos...especially those of a political nature. John Kerry, like other major politicians, have limits on HOW things are said not WHAT is said. This kid was clearly stirring the pot (he has a website of gags and stunts he has pulled) and attempting to get a certain kind of attention...the kind that could lead to trouble in the form of fights, mayhem, etc. John Kerry has a vested interest in those things not happening.

If you watch the video, they asked him several times to leave. They then tried to gently escort him away. However, HE started resisting their efforts and continued resisting until the tasing. That was solely his choice. Not the officers. The taser was used to gain compliance. Once he was handcuffed, no further force was used,and he was walked out without injuries. It was obvious that he knew he was being filmed and wanted the officers to loose it on tape. Instead, they did what needed to be done, nothing more. It is a shame that the officers have been put on administrative leave for doing what they were trained to do and what YOU the taxpaying citizen pays them for. Everyone wants to cry out Civil Rights.... Well people, try acting CIVIL for once.

Not that I want to watch it again, but it looked to me the first time around like the taser was used AFTER the handcuffs were in place. At first glance, this definately looks to be more force than necessary. He was on the ground, subdued by four or five guards. What was he doing at that point to warrent the taser? He looked pretty well immobilized already.

He was not just asking a question, he was going on a rant, and the university was free to remove him whenever they hell they chose to do so. When he refused to leave and pushed back the security guards they were entitled to use reasonable force to remove him. He upped the ante by his freaking out and not leaving peacefully, not them. A university may be a bastion of free speech, but the administration is still entitled to decide when to remove someone for any damn reason they choose, and once they do, if a person refuses to go he is trespassing and force can legally be used to remove him. And how do security guards know that he was "a student with nothing more than passion"? He was an irate person who would not follow proper directions to bugger off, yelling at a public figure that probably lots of nuts would like to make the news by in attacking - Kerry. Security did the right thing in restraining him. As for the Taser, well, that seems ridiculous. With 4 or 5 officers they could not restrain or cuff this skinny little bitch?.

WOW, that was horrible, that guy did nothing to provoke that attack. I've been saying it for years here in Canada and it obviously applies in the USA also. Police should be required to complete a university degree in police services before being hired and trained by a police force. this would go a long way to ensure that the type of officers in this video would not make it onto the force. Clearly a bunch of ego maniacs, with no sense of judgement and they disgraced all officers in uniform. There are too many officers that are basicly school dropouts so they get themselves hired onto the police force, because we don't have high standards for the types of people that are trusted with weapons. Clearly, in this case, the taser was used to silence someone already in custody and this is not the purpose of a taser. A disgrace to all police officers in the country, not to mention Sen Kerry. Its time to start lobbying our politicians to ensure that we educate our officers in public universities, and if they aren't able to graduate in a university setting are they really capable of the complex issues that police officers must address. Do we really want to continue to hire uneducated and ignorant people with their own agendas that aren't able to understand the complex issues of people of and law. I am so disappointed again, I want so much to be proud of the work our officers do, but it only takes a few bad apples to disgrace the police force. Too many people don't get just how poorly these officers acted and this was in public, imagine what happens behind closed doors. So much for freedom of speach, or of any kind. It makes me so sad, Once again the police should themselves as being above the law.
