Leo Teremin was an artist, an electrical engineer, and a visionary. There's no evidence that he was a spy. And just what was he supposed to have taken from 1920's New York back to a Soviet Union that was just dragging itself out of serfdom? This video is a very nice demonstration of how the theremon is played by proximity, not by contact. I'd like to see--and hear--more musicians performing on this unique instrument.
Theremin was sent to Siberia, thanks to the paranoia of the insane SOB Stalin. Luckily, he survived to see his sweetheart after about 70 years. Amazing.
recently they had a concert in LA that was a recreation of the 10 thermin 'orchestra' done way back when (can't find the article at the moment but if you search Amon Tobin disney concert soviet thermin you'll get a hit).
Wasn't poor ole Leo Theremin dragged back to the Soviet Union illegally from NYC back in the twenties then sent to a concentration camp? There is a documentary about him somewhere, I saw it. Oh, this Theremin sounds like Charlie Brown's teacher is singing this song but it sounds cool anyway.
"1920's, dragging itself out of Serfdom" Oh Yea Don. What they 'dragged' themselves into was 'Pure Sweetness and Light' http"//daflikkers.blogspot.com/
Sigh.... what close-minded, uneducated assholes! (sarc and esque above) Anyway, love the comment bout Charlie Brown adults... spot on!!! LOL Can't believe I've never heard of this instrument .... wayyyyyyy cool! Love it! Thanks for all the info everyone! Rock On!!!!
