Is it just me or is she just as awkward? it's like her face is not even that of a real person, kind of like, it's permanently posed into a smile with slightly raised eyebrows.
It's hard to interview a subject that doesn't talk much or talks too much, but she was definitely struggling this time as far as anchorwoman skills go... and what an awful segue from his favorite sandwich to the word she wanted him to spell... she should have done her research to at least pronounce it right anyway.
This kid has the body language, vocal mannerisms and social quirks of a person with Asperger's Syndrome. I know at least 6 people who have it. (Two are Ph.Ds) It's the high end of the autistic spectrum, leaving them with very high intelligence but an inability to understand the social world. I bet he's home schooled because he's too smart for regular school and gets picked on too much ... gee, just like here on glumbert.com.

worldcitizen and other posters maybe ought to rethink the course of their lives if they just think "jerk" or worse when dealing with someone who would obviously do better socially if he had the capacity. I worked in a building with 400 electrical engineers -- some of them geniuses -- and some socially inept since day one, and no amount of learning could unto it. Fortunately, most of the people there were mature enough to accept that some people's brains are wired differently, and accepted them for what they had to offer. Some people are jerks because they don't care. Other people just don't know how to behave "normally" -- and often never will. Apparently, some posters to this video don't know there is a difference.

I saw this kid on the spelling bee. Pretty damn amazing. Rightwingnutaq.... this is how the kid is, no transmission delay, not nervous on TV. There was a private interview in his home. Sweet kid, much more adult than a lot of adults, something that scares people, in turn people think is wierd for. To all you people that think hes being an ass, watch it again. He answers all the questions with fact. When he won, he was on stage. He doesnt know what the f**k his mom said when he won... ask her! You guys are all jealous of smart people and asses for it. Get a life!!!

A lot of people would love to have the air time he got. In the world of amazing feats performed by children the spelling bee is fairly mundane. The least he could have done was answer a few questions from someone who was trying to give him a little praise.

The kid doesn't have any kind of disorder or social anything. like everyone is suggesting. everyone always wants to say something is wrong with someone. the only thing wrong with this kid is the way he was brought up.. and maybe he wasn't blessed with the looks of a god. He's a nice kid, a bit sarcastic and comes off kind of arrogant, but hey, some people say if you've got it flaunt it. So he can't walk around being arrogant in the sense which popular 'good looking' kids do, making others feel as though they're not good enough. He sure can make people feel stupid every time they open their mouths.
asperger's syndrome is a nice way to explain why you are socially awkward and can't maintain a conversation.
VERY few who say they have it, actually do have it and it does not always mean they will use their gift to progress their lives.
I've met many people who were home schooled (due to living in forested area's or rural area's) and the majority were like this kid. Usually above average intelligence due to a lot of one on one teaching, but god help them if they ever were in a large group or had to give a speech or even something little like idle chit chat.
Anyway (tl;dr version): nothing is wrong with this kid.

i remember reading that some Indian kid came in second (it was one of those hardship stories) but all the newspapers were reporting on the winner. Hell they even were making a big deal that the kid eats tuna fish often and how that 'may' have contributed to his winning somehow?
I can tell by this woman's facial expressions, tone of her voice and questions that she is making fun of him. She can barely contain herself from laughing in his face. Pretty cruel of her. He really niggled her fragile ego when he corrected her pronunciation of his name.

I think what the actual low point of this is having the interviewer practically advertising a "Subway Tuna sub" in front of the camera as though we're supposed to be amazed that we've never seen a tuna sub before. Isn't this a news program?! All that was missing was the GD logo! Was Jarrod gonna show up suddenly too?
I laughed out loud however, when he inadvertently f***ed up CNN's Subway ad by saying he and his family were treated to a "special dinner" instead. Love it!
