I agree the government has no right to deny you your right to suicide. Abortion is messier, because you have to balance the mother's rights with the potential rights of the unborn child. Even though our republican friends will not like this: The news in Europe are full with stories how much relieved the people here are that Obama won the election and not McCain. A lot of sympathy for American has been won (back) by this election.
If Iran is left dragging out diplomacy, they will develop nukes. The questions are, should we allow that? Can we stop it if we want to?
Well we should not allow it, but I'm not sure we can stop it. Maybe I need to adopt an Obamaism, and think yes we can!
Obama will not use military action to block Iran from getting nukes, and Iran knows that. Only Bush has the balls to do anything about it before Obama takes office. Obama may even secretly want Bush to do something about it, so Obama can negotiate with Iran from a position of strength, and pretend he was always against military action. However, military action may not accomplish much, it may only delay Iran a bit, and kill any chance of diplomacy. Not that diplomacy can work, because Iran will skillfully play the diplomacy game forever, developing nukes at a rate and secrecy that never trips an attack threshold.
Certainly Bush has already had the effectiveness of a military strike on Iran evaluated and planned. The question is, has Bush already made a decision, and has been waiting till after the election to execute?
I'm not saying we should attack, because I'm not privy to the estimates of military effectiveness. Iran has their facilities buried, disguised, and scattered. Any strike, even with really good intel, may be ineffective. An ineffective strike is hardly worth doing. But if we could pull off an effective strike, that would seriously delay or degrade Iran's nuclear capability, I might support that. We'd also have to consider if Iran is really helping us in Iraq and Afghanistan, and if a strike might actually cow the Iranians, or only incite them. If I was going to bother targeting Iranian nuke facilities, I'd also target Iran's Revolutionary Guard. The strike on Libya did effectively cow them from supporting terrorism. Its not like doing nothing, as we're doing now, has reduced Iranian support for terrorism.

Please tell me your magical perfect plan to stop Iran from developing nuclear weapons, or how happily the world will go on with Iranian nukes threatening the ME and Europe? Iran is seeking nuclear "energy", while being caught in the past developing weapons, and only recently was found to be converting ballistic missiles for carrying nuclear warheads. Now did I suggest bombing Iran? I said it was one of many military options, and I questioned its effectiveness. I also suggested a blockade. Gitmo is legal, in that its more leniant than executing captured terrorists on the spot. The Geneva convention if even applicable to a non-nation army, specifically says soldiers fighting out of uniform, not identifyable to an army, are spies and can be executed. Many captured resistance fighters were executed in WW2 under similar conditions.
I never said Iraq had significant WMDs in 2003 (they did have them in 91). I said Saddam had previously had WMDs, and Saddam kicked out the UN inspectors trying to verify all Iraqis WMDs had been destroyed, so the world didn't know Iraq had almost no WMDs left, and was left to faulty intelligence estimates. All of which said Iraq surely must have some WMDs left, since Saddam tried so hard to hide them. The truth was, Saddam didn't want Iran to know Iraq was now disarmed of WMDs. The fact is, Saddam failed to fulfill the UN resolution to allow the UN to verify disarmament.
I defined torture as causing pain and / or physical injury. Technically waterboarding does neither, it only induces fear of death. So its more like mock executions in the psycological torture. I'm sure it sucks, I just have less pity for terrorists that target civilians, than I do enemy soldiers. I would use it only on terrorists if I believed there was some critical information they had, such as knowledge about an impending bombing surely to kill others, and I felt waterboarding would give accurate results faster than other traditional interrogation methods. I can think of few situations where this would actually apply. Most terrorists lie under interrogation, especially under extreme pressure. But I certainly don't value a terrorists rights above the lives of other people. To give a terrorist his due process, while others die as a result, is a mockery of justice.
One example might be... say you capture a guy in Iraq driving a wired car bomb towards a target. In Iraq, they frequently have "complex" terrorist attacks, where one car bomb goes off, then another when the rescuers arrive, then a guy wearing a suicide vest shows up at that disorganized crowd. If you knew the target, and you knew it quickly enough, you could save innocent lives. I don't think even waterboarding works fast enough then, the Iraqis would probably do not-nice things to this person to find out the target. However, the threat of execution or life in prison might be enough to crack them, preventing any torture.
But if we caught a known terrorist say in Germany, with radioactive and bomb traces on his clothes, I'd be just fine letting the medievil treatment go to work, if normal questioning and threats failed. You would let the bomb go off.
