What an astonishing act of bravery by these firefighters. Saving a fellow human in danger is to be applauded. I do hope he is extremely grateful to his rescuers. I wonder, did anyone else notice the way in which the lead firefighter moved? Lithe, athletic, poised, with that balance that comes from years of training to the peak of physical fitness. His uniform, firm jaw, steely gaze, determined expression, manly bearing. Uuuurrggghhhh! whhhaaaar! ZZZhhhhrrrh. Ah, what a marvellous release that was.

Col. Vanker:

Re: Your Question.

Niagra Falls (and the border it straddles) is approx. a 70-minute drive from my current location.

For many years, I've visited both the city of Niagra Falls, Ontario and Niagra Falls, New York. This particular clip that shows us the action, takes place on the U.S. side of the Falls; the spot where this gentleman in question is standing, has an out-cropping, or ledge near-by, which (in the summer time) tourists can walk out onto with perfect safety. I've done it many, many times. Look at the clip again: this fella appears as if he does not have a care in the world. He does not looked "rushed"; he does not look panicked; actually, he appears as if he's out for nothing more than a Sunday stroll. If this isn't an example of someone with sever emotional/psychological issues, then I'd be hard-pressed to know what WOULD pass for those problems. Throughout my whole life (and even before), the history of Niagra Falls has been fraught with people trying "conquer the Falls", i.e., going over while encased in a barrel, or some such contraption. Most died, of course, but a tiny minority have actually accomplished it. Others reasons include suicide, and such. Clearly, THIS man does NOT fall into that category. He's just unbalanced, by the looks of it.

If any you ever get a chance to stand right alongside Niagra Falls, you won't regret it (on either the American or Canadian side); it's a pretty awesome sight, that commands immediate respect and admiration.

The shame about this video, of course, is that those brave rescue personnel had to risk their lives, simply because this moron decided to stroll out onto that precipice. It's their job......but still.

Anyways, Colonel, I hope this answers your question.

Sincerely,

C.

In the winter, Niagara Falls goes from powerful to beautiful (and powerful). As anyone who lives on its border knows, the mis creates great mounds of ice. Tourists (the thin blue jacket - definitely a southerner, i.e. Pennsylvania and south) tend to think that the fluffy-looking stuff is "just like back home at Virginie Beach" but find out is it hard as rocks (thanks to the Canadian Arctic Import Service). Mr. Tourist was probably out for a photo-op and began a slide. Once in the water and stopped, what else was there to do? Cry like a girl for help? He tried to keep his hands warm (because it wasn't jus' like Ol' Virginie) in his pockets.

OK. What dumbbutt told the helicopter to fly so low? Anyone who has been within 100m of a helo knows it takes work to stay standing on dry tarmac.

This shows how ignorance and lack of planning does not discriminate based on job position. It infects all levels, beginning with you (gentle reader), through the people saving your lives, and continues all the way up to, dare I say, to the Queen (Elton John, that is). The only way to fix the top floor, is to put a concentrated effort on fortifying the bottom floor, and that means YOUR floor.

Bottom line: It is all the fault of 'fearofflying' (a.k.a. f*off)

Hey Syzygy, Pod kinda has a point and he has simplified it pretty well. It’s a complex problem though…

The dollar’s role as world reserve currency is important. The reserve-currency role means that every country has a demand for dollars in order to pay its oil bills and settle its international accounts. The world demand means that the U.S. can run large deficits for many years but bottom line is that Asian countries are accumulating hundreds of billions in dollar assets and reserves, making them America’s bankers. They pretty much own the US economy.

Industrially developed countries such as Japan, Taiwan, and South Korea have no need to use the cash they earn from trade with the U.S. to import American capital goods to fuel their further development. They’re developed enough already and are self sustainable effectively. What they do is use dollars the US to purchase U.S. govt bonds, US companies, real estate, and corporate bonds. Buying up the States stealth-style basically!

China ain’t developed and currently the US and other First World firms are flooding China with capital and technology. China doesn’t need to use its trade surplus with the U.S. to purchase capital goods as the US is bringing them to China!

But with something like $1.4 trillion in reserves, this gives China HUGE leverage over the US.

China has more than $1 trillion in U.S. debt through international markets and if it so decides, can foreclose on the US at “a time and place of it’s choosing”. We’ve all seen recent hints that the Chinese may flood the international market with dollars to force the dollar value down (it’s already currently at something like a 15 year low). Even this suggestion sent U.S. stocks tumbling and the Fed had to release billions in U.S. dollar reserves to calm the markets. GWB responded that China would be foolhardy to act in such a manner and that’s great…and to a certain extent true.
But be realistic and ask yourselves what IS to stop the Chinese?

China ($1.4trillion in reserves alone) really has more than it needs and they’d have no problem teaching a hegemonic superpower a VERY painful economic lesson if the need arose. All the governments know that and it’s some fix for a superpower to be in, especially one who’s administration
seems so disdainful of world opinion right?

Washington would really have to anger Japan and Korea to provoke such action, but in a showdown with China—over Taiwan, for example—China holds the cards. If China decided to dump its reserves it could put the dollar under intense pressure and send U.S. interest rates skyrocketing, major price increases will likely occur, and it WILL certainly cause a dramatic reduction in real incomes
.
Today, the US is in a delicate and fairly untenable position with China. American industry’s compulsion / addiction for outsourcing manufacturing to cheap overseas labor markets has resulted in American stores being glutted with shoddy Chinese products while the American manufacturing base that was once the envy of the world is vanishing. Chinese toys going cheap for Christmas guys, roll-up….roll-up!

Without wanting to be a harbinger of doom, I’m afraid a US recession seems a natural consequence...

PS - You may wanna look at where a lot of your in home high tech stuff is made – it ain’t just cheap crap they produce!

PPS - Buy Yuan!
mako100,

If... if... if...

I know exactly where the home high-tech is cheaply glued together by people paid US$1.00 a day. Waiving a "...do you know..." mace about you is not effective in the least.

I also know where all the tech (cheaply glued together by people paid US$1.00 a day) was researched and developed: US, Europe, Japan. I am not just talking about the gee-whiz circuitry, but the plastics, forming the plastics, the metal alloys and the means to produce it all, including the cheap glue. ChinaTech is merely a very well organized, reverse-engineering, educated in the US by PhDs from India, follow-before-lead society. Original ideas stopped after they made gun powder and pizza.

I have no reason to doubt your data is current and accurate, but the "fear of pending doom" is verbatim from before the depths of the cold war, but with the decimal (adolf vanker read: comma) moved a few places. I believe the US's Carter admin. put the US in the worst recession since "The Depression" (1929), and the US has hit other recessions, including the recent biggies of 1973 (not even a quadruple increase in fuel prices stopped the "US Gas Hog"), 1979, 1987 and 2001. The US market not only recovered, but moved the decimal place in the good direction as well. Why did the Chinese not sink the boat of the US economy during these times of US weakness? They probably weren't ready when Carter was at his most spineless. Was it because Clinton was giving them tech secrets hand-over-fist, and they did not want to stop the flow of freebies?

It is my belief that China can not, rather than choose not. Why wait to assume world domination? Perhaps they do not wish to be #1, because they see how much the rest of the world prejudicially despise the country (and the people of that country) in that position. I will also bet my bottom Yuan that they have no plan to be the world's largest aid-giver, debt-forgiver and philanthropist. There is just too much overhead that goes with being the top dog that scares away all the competition.

Everyone wants the glory, but no one wants the burden.

And please, Bush did not gain power by being a box of rocks or the son of a box of rocks or because he was a beauty queen (twice). Every time someone calls him dumb, I want to ask, "...when they plan to be the president of the most powerful nation in the world (even more powerful than the Chinese)." I will agree that he is not a public speaker, and sometimes, to sooth the common man's heart, a public speaker is needed. Calling him stupid only makes me classify who does so as a bleating sheep of some other entity.

May I be foolish for a little while:

"Never wait to use your best China [ironic], because you never know when the wait will be one day too many." (re: why are they waiting?)

"Be careful what you wish for." (re: more than just chest pounding at #1)

"The Billion Man March" - Just like all the urban legends, this one was another way China could attain world domination... At the same time, everyone in China would run twenty-five steps, due west (opposite of the Earth's rotation), and then leap toward the west, landing a short distance away. The force of the total weight of the population would slow the rotation of the Earth enough to cause the crust to shift, buildings to collapse, seas to flood inland for hundreds of miles, and utter devastation of the world... except the remaining quarter-billion Chinese, statistical survivors.

[/end foolishness]

I have full confidence in the free countries of the world working together (competition IS working together) to support every economy for the purpose of good, and spreading world-wide wealth (health and everything that makes life "good" - i.e. clean air and water). If that means supporting the US economy during our short lifetime and the Algerians beginning in the year 2525, so be it. The collective good of the world far outweigh the collective bad. It is just that the bad try so much harder.

So, I have no problem agreeing with your numbers, but I will not agree with your tale of pending doom. That does not mean I am right.

p.s. BUY CANADIAN! (I'm sure of it!)
Sorry Syzygy – wasn't meant as a pop at the US per se, I was merely talking economic fundamentals.

The common wisdom seems to be that China, with its $1.4trillion reserves, is so dependent on the US market that they would be forced to buy and hold US dollars just to keep the consumer market in the States afloat.
In order to keep the value of all their dollars up, China would be forced to not only keep buying dollars, but even buy them at a faster clip, while the US Treasury continued to more-or-less print dollars at will, thanks to the dollar/petrodollar’s unique role as the world’s reserve currency.

I don’t disagree that this has been the case for a while, but I am suggesting it’s moving away from this status quo. If you’ve followed the economic policy of the US over the last few decades then you know the US is the ‘debtor’ and the rest of the world’s central banks are the ‘banks.’

China is one of the US’s biggest ‘banks’. Apparently, when that bank has several trillion dollars worth of US reserves, then maybe it’s not a wise idea to threaten said bank with trade sanctions as the US are trying to do currently?

The US dollar only continues to maintain it’s strength due to other countries willingness to continue buying US debt, with China being one of the major buyers. There’s an old saying that goes something like this:

“When you owe the bank $1,000,000, you have a major problem. When you owe the bank $100,000,000, the bank has a major problem.”

The US has been wanting China to remove the dollar peg from the yuan for several years now… the idea being that the US trade deficit with China would somehow mysteriously correct itself if the yuan was allowed to rise to its market value. This rhetoric’s been turned up in recent months, with talk of trade sanctions and the like if China fails to heed US wishes.

Beijing know just how much clout they can exert over US financial policy, and listening to the rhetoric from both sides it sounds like they’ve decided that they are willing to absorb the global damage.

It is the strong possibility of global recession which GWB talks about when he asserts foolishness on China’s part – I wasn’t berating him!

China dumps its reserves and hugely devalues the dollar (which it IS capable of doing) then that has global ramifications, and with the US dollar as the world currency, relatively speaking it’ll hit the US harder than other economies and frankly that is probably all the Chinese will care about. War doesn’t need bullets sometimes and as a famous guy once said “to win one hundred victories in one hundred battles is not the acme of skill. To subdue the enemy without fighting is the acme of skill.”

Basically the Chinese feel they’d come out better than the US would in an economic war and with their current growth rates, I kinda see their point.

Bear in mind also that time frames in Asia are slightly different to those in the west. The West tends to view something as worth doing if it can be done in a lifetime, whereas China as the worlds oldest civilization kinda thinks slightly longer term.

Ask when something happened in China and they refer to dynasties. Ask the same in the west and you get time, day, month, year… They’re far more patient than we are – their concept of the time its worth to get something done is measured in generations…

China is patient. China is huge, and China has a HUGE hand to play. So whilst I’m not suggesting it will happen overnight, there is absolutely no doubt the Chinese are gradually building a very, very hard hand to beat when the poker starts.

So when you talk of China not wanting to assume the world’s #1 spot, you are quite correct if you mean the use of force. They’ll just wait for it to come to them. They don’t need to work too hard for it at the moment, but if they feel they need to twist the screw economically, they have the ability.

Personally speaking – the Asians in general are always better at math than the rest of the world, and they’ll like a gamble too, as long as they’ve done the homework on the card deck!

Now I’m popping out to buy a new surround sound system. Anything with Made in Guangzhuo on it’ll do…

Mako - Thank you for explaining my "point of the Chinese pen" comment. Excellent job, and exactly my point. If the world economy were a video game, then GWB would be battling for the ammo dump, while everyone else takes everything else. It is this big gain for a small minority of powerful Oil, and Arms men that has the US focused so hard on this one thing and the rest of the nations problems lay unattended.

You also write: "Basically the Chinese feel they’d come out better than the US would in an economic war and with their current growth rates, I kinda see their point."

You bet they will! They have cash, and a huge manufacturing infrastructure.
The US is shipping all of it's manufacturing to China as fast as possible. How is the US going to garner a shift in the trade imbalance? To paraphrase GWB, "We will become the worlds leading service economy."

Services are not NEEDS, just WANTS. The USA will fail if all we do is sell services to one another, and manufacture nothing. Services are not finished goods! When was the last time anyone went to a mall to shop for a service, and how many Chinese were there buying a service from a US company.

Mako also writes:

"Bear in mind also that time frames in Asia are slightly different to those in the west. The West tends to view something as worth doing if it can be done in a lifetime, whereas China as the worlds oldest civilization kinda thinks slightly longer term."

OH MY OH MY YES!!! Here in the US we are focused on a corporate future of 3 months, and a US future of 4 years (One term). Until we stop printing and spending money we will never be in the position we used to hold. The future will belong to China, because the corporate and government of the US is composed entirely of laws and decisions made by the plutocracy. The decisions made by wealthy men is never the best decision for the majority, or for the country.

I could write for months on this one subject, but what is the point? The American public is now so uneducated, and so over worked, we just don't have the time to fight multiple battles. And our voting seems to have very little effect on the actual outcome of elections... BLECK!

Mak -

Concerning the "debtor nation" - Should not every nation be "in the red" (debt), as they are not capitol enterprises? Should not every extra Euro/Yuan/Dollar be returned to the system to build infrastructure, education, health care, defense, public works, etc.?

The Nixon administration took the US Dollar off the gold standard, requiring "faith" in the dollar and our system of government (regardless of political affiliation; anyone can tax and spend, or not-tax and let the people spend), not just by the citizens, but the world. As you pointed out, China has attached its monetary value to the US dollar, and the rest of the world has shown faith in that system backed by freedom - the fredom to explore, to create, to develop newer, better, bigger, smaller, faster, slower everything, from automation to communications to medical to "high tech gadgets cheaply glued together..." Faith _is_ investment. China holding a trillion "anythings" means (to me) they know the value of their holdings and gladly invest.

The numbers you are using ($1 million, $1 milliard/billion, ...) should not w-o-w anyone, you included. With the German Reichsmark and the Turkish Lira, "trillion" meant "pocket change" until re-valued... by... um... the US. Not too long ago a "millionaire" of US dollars was an unbelievably rich person. Today, individuals are worth 1/10th the $1 trillion you speak about. All it takes is ten of them to buy China... A trillion today will be laughable tomorrow. Yes, interest compounded daily, etc. will magnify an imbalance, but a cheap US dollar will reduce the actual value of that $1 xillion.

Arguing against my own previous post of China not sinking the US economy because they can not (and agreeing with your post)... China is a perfect societal system, doing everything enmasse. Individualism is virtually unheard of, moving as a single unit. As you pointed out, China has been around since the beginning of recorded history, and to wait another hundred or five hundred years would be a minor pause in their history, delaying the gratification of world domination (if that can be gratifying). (sidebar: I think Korea (the pure Han) has recorded their history to 5,000 years - claiming 1,000 years longer than Chinese history)

You side with China (meaning their ability or success), I do not (on both counts). I just do not see China wanting to sink the world's life raft just so it can have a few rats survive on the flotsam. More than likely I am wrong... living in Asia for a number of years, every day showed me a new "WTF?!" moment. I can not call their ideas backwards, seeing that their system has outlived the brightest candles of the western hemisphere, with no change in sight. Not to mention they only need two sticks in their cutlery drawer, and I six bulky, single-use weapons (salad fork, dinner fork, soup spoon, coffe spoon, butter knife, dinner knife). Every day was "interesting."

Sorry if I misinterpret any of your posts. It is hard for me to read em-PHAS-is in this text. Keep it up.

Pod -

I have never been employed by a poor person (nor do I know anyone who has) - but if you have had the experience to be employed by a pauper, please enlighten me. syzygy - I have this to say to your vile elitist arrogance: [ ]
Hey Syzygy / Pod - no need to get at each other on this! :-)

Regards whether I support China or not I guess I'm not really siding one way or the other... It's more a case of stating economic facts.

Syz, you are right, the Chinese don't want to sink the World's life raft but they know their power is in the ascendancy and are making it crystal clear to the US that they need to be taken seriously.

Threats to dump reserves are probably (hopefully) just that, and will be part of a longer running negotiation. The Chinese are justifiably an incredibly sceptical bunch when it comes to the US telling them what to do with their currency and economy. If you were in their shoes i suspect you would be too

They'll revalue the yuan when they are good and ready, if at all! And you can count on the fact they will keep those dollar reserves on standby should they need to dump them fast. They act as the best insurance they have against any moves to reduce the vast flows of income coming into the coffers!

In a sense they ARE at war with the rest of the world (certainly with India) but it's an economic war and they know they are well equipped to fight it.
The US would be affected primarily because the dollar is the global currency, but I do agree that because so many of the western powers use China as a factory, any dumping of dollars will impact these nations too.

The Chinese see a massive need to fuel that growth with natural resource and the bottom line is they have none of the reservations about approaching states with that the US wouldn't touch with Castro's dick! Distasteful as it may be, this is another area where I see them being streets ahead of the US in terms of securing strategic resources

Basically a little delegation of China's best and brightest will turn up in some resource rich rogue African state and simply say, "We want X, how much?". They are not too choosey when it comes to trade, they simply need resources and aren't really bothered by reports of human rights violations (!) if that nation has resources it needs.

Even the Aussies are providing them uranium on the promise it won't be weaponised. Erm... anyone see any problems with this?

Their traditional business first mentality also creates an image of them being straightforward (again something I question, but it has been said to me on numerous occassions) - no haggling over things which are not of consequence to getting the deal done. We want X, we'll pay you for it and leave - simple as 1,2,3

I'm based in Asia and have been for the last 5 years. You are right 'WTF' moments happen on a daily basis! I may be slightly biased as I see the Chinese in action all over the region, although actually it's the Indians who seem the brightest and most 'internationalised'.

Guess I just feel the Chinese really are a sleeping dragon, and economically they have only just began to stir.

Mr. Mako - No problem with you, as you are interested in civil discourse and funny comments. This syz fellow seems to be in a bad mood, or in deep support of the current administration. Who knows, but apparently he sees the truth in what I have written, or he would not be so upset.

I will not be silenced by elitist snobs just because I work for a living. I will continue to speak for the part of America that the Administration wants silent. I will continue to be ANGRY, as many Americans are, and have good cause to be.

I have a wealth of personal experience of REAL business, not government / political rhetoric. I have worked in all kinds of manufacturing, and for several corporations for over twenty years. I have run my own business for ten (All Americans). I have worked as a highly paid consultant, and as a full and part time laborer. I had to pay my own way through school, because my family was poor.

Real experience garnered through REAL employment in the REAL America, where the work has to be done, done correctly, and done on schedule.

Am I and the rest of hard working Americans angry with a Administration that spends our money like drunken wealthy bastards? YES! Because rich people don't know how hard the average American has to work to earn just ten dollars, that they can spend in a nanosecond. And on top of that our real jobs are being outsourced and we will be left doing what?

SO I SAY IT AGAIN AS FOLLOWS:

(GWB and most of the current Administration has never had to work a real job, with real risk, with no safety net, with no health insurance in their entire lives! So of course they don't know what a real earned dollar is worth. They don't even shop for their own food! How out of touch will our "representation" become, if this is how it is now!)

If there is one thing that Americans, and the rest of of the World know for certain is that manufacturing REAL things, NOT services will correct the trade imbalance. The exporting of manufacturing to other countries will only hasten the demise of the US economy.

syz - You write: "I have never been employed by a poor person (nor do I know anyone who has) - but if you have had the experience to be employed by a pauper, please enlighten me."

Of course you NEVER have, you elitist snob! You have never been down here so YOU, just don't get it!

Cool Pods - very well said. I'm thinking you're actually speaking for a shedload of Yanks right now! Guess you can kinda tell those posters with a few years of life experience under their belts, and you certainly make the grade!

Can I respectfully ask you to stay angry! Hopefully you and the rest of the normal people in the States can get the US back to where it should be in the eyes of the world - respected and understood!

Now... about settin' up that water cannon idea at Niagara. Bringing the Canucks and the Yanks together in harmony and fun blasting suicidal idiots into little numbered bins below the falls... THAT is something I'd travel for...

Mako - Don't worry I will stay plenty angry, until the people get true representation. I'm not even angry at Republicans, except at how they let their party be taken over by a bunch of manipulative thieving zealots. I used to admire the republicans for they lived and operated by their stated creed. Now they say one thing and do another.

WHEN WILL THE REAL REPUBLICANS TAKE THEIR PARTY BACK FROM THE CHRISTIAN NUT JOBS! WE NEED YOU! Take your party back, Please!

Now about those water cannons. They will have to be quite strong, or perhaps just paint balls.

Was over there in 2004 shithead canuck. Stayed on the canadian side overlooking the better american falls. Angel Falls is much better - not as tacky with plastic key rings of maid of the mist, etc. You chaps even ruined a natural wonder. How sad.

So how come ya weren't on the U.S. side? Did you qualify as being too stupid to cross the border? Or the did the Americans take one look at you and say "Get the fuck out"?

Uhhhhh Canuck........You left yourself wide open on this one............If the US said to get the fuck out then why did Canada allow him in?

Pats Canuck on the back for bashing his own country.

Or the did the Americans take one look at you and say "Get the fuck out"?" Did i say I wasn't on the U.S. side, tool? A perfect example of how you fill in stories with your own assumptions.

Thanks for that great insight, beautifully couched in such a poetic and evocative manner. Your comments on the videos and posts are always relevant, always heeded by others and we really, really do care heaps about you.

Mako, mako, you've used these tired lines many times already. They all belong to someone else. All you've done here is regurgitate old jokes or copy canuck's arguments. Try thinking for yourself.

Reagarding your comment on my post above, take a closer look. It's in quotes b/c it belongs to someone else. I was quoting your mouth stretcher master canuck from above. What is he going to do to you when he reads that you were actually bashing his words. You may have to find your own liquid diet goiong forward. I'm sure lordandmaster is quite prepared to act as surrogate donor so no worries mate. Alternatively, you can resume your old practice of wanking in a glass and downing the hatch.

That razor sharp mind, the eloquent turn of phrase, the satirical outlook on life... What a literary figure you must be.

Then again you could just be a rather pathetic little ASBO holding parasite.
