Um, I am always wondering what so many US Americans think is so bad about liberalism?
It basically means to accept that people live their life as they want as long as they don't harm others. Not everybody likes to eat burgers and go to church on Sundays, but that does make them bad people or terrorists.
bug - It is a political tool "Liberalism" is kinda like saying someone is a "Card carrying member of the ACLU", or "Conservative", or any other term that will divide a population along a political line. In fact both sides use these dividing words in preference to actually having a dialog about real issues.
I use them too when I get attacked by the "right" or the "left" for one of my comments. If a comment hits too close to the truth of a issue, then the polarizing words just seem to start flying. I prefer civil discourse, but there are times when we all use these unproductive words, but I think that most Americans are just angry at how real issues facing the nation that just cannot be fixed, and so we all need someone to blame. It is simplistic and human to find a scapegoat.
Perhaps one day American citizens will realize that there is manipulation going on, and move away from these extremes, meet in the middle, and except that work is only accomplished when there is a real dialog about real problems. Hatred and division garners nothing.
