Maybe the guy who earns 1.3 million/day would let me sit in his office for a day, when he is taking a day off, and give me his paycheck for the standard 8 hour shift. I won't even go to lunch, and I promise I won't touch anything or do anything to earn it, just like him.

Actually he makes $154107/hour for a standard 8 hour work day. He makes enough in one day for any average person to retire instantly and comfortably.

i won't disagree with the overall theme of this video, but is pisses me off that organizations like warongreed.org completely discredit themselves by trying to oversell their claims.

all PE firms don't pump and dump, fire employees, cut benefits, and sell off assets. many times, PE firms will come in and REPLACE the management and make the company run more profitably, helping all stakeholders in the company. PE firms flourish on their expertise on running a business well. this doesn't always include cutting the fat, it very often means just changing strategy.

warongreed.org put a lot of effort into this video and i think they have a good cause. but why do they need to overstretch and come across with a biased, unresearched, extreme view? it's unnecessary.

Exactly what's the difference between...

PE firms don't pump and dump, fire employees, cut benefits, and sell off assets.

and

PE firms will come in and REPLACE the management and make the company run more profitably, helping all stakeholders in the company.

other than wording?

The difference is simply that:

making a company more profitable

does not have to =

pump and dump, fire employees, cut benefits, and sell off assets.

This video does not suppress greed, but encourages it. I also believe that the US needs more "progressive taxation." However, this video turned me off a bit.
I am so tired of hearing people who choose not to make money bitch about not having any. How come this video doesn't show the amount of dedication, education, and work ethic it takes to get a business running?

People that don't have much success in life are usually the same ones that spend their time watching lots of TV, don't save money, and get themselves in huge debt.
Good god these people's responses in the video only prove how they are where they are. Idiots! You never hear an intelligent answer.

Y can't u people understand how hard it is to even start a buisness like this. He worked his way up to this and put in a lot of work in order to get to this position. He also was in a position like you or me, but instead of whining like a little bitch, he did something about it. Just cause ur a lazy ass and dont feel like doin everything and u want the government to baby u doesnt mean u have to pick on the wealthy and sucessful.

Also he pays a lower PERCENTAGE not a smaller ammount of money. He probably pays more in taxes a year that u have in ur LIFETIME, or ever will. This video is so one sided its ridiculous, u stupid people need to pay attention to wat they are actually sayin in it.

I HATE STUPID PEOPLE!!!!!!!!!

Worked his way up from very near the top: Henry Kravis was born in Tulsa Oklahoma. His father was an oil engineer and onetime oil business partner of Joseph P. Kennedy, father of the President. Young Henry attended prep school in the east, and went to Claremont College in California, where he majored in economics and was captain of the golf team....

Fine, give the guy credit where credit is due, but don't make him out as some poor dirt farmer who saved his meager salary, and through perseverance, got to where he is now.

Damn right, I too am sick of idiots complaining that after living their lives in their comfort zones want what others worked hard to get.

There is no free lunch folks. If you live in America you have the capacity to make your life better, period. There are too many other living examples that have done it under the same or worse circumstances.

You can make excuses or you can make your life better. You can never do both.

Whine, whine, whine. It's not fair, it's not fair, it's not fair!

Consider how many people this guy employs with his company and his lifestyle. The fact that he spends a lot of money on stuff can only help our economy! His company provides jobs for thousands of people and he personally pays people to take care of his stuff. Now, the government can tax all of those people and get more revenue!

Social distribution of wealth just doesn't work. It doesn't make people want to work hard because the government will take a sizable chunk anyway.

Taxing the wealthy doesn't help the economy. If you tax the wealthy they have less money to spend on their company and less money to spend on products that other companies make.

If you're fat, quit eating food that fat people eat. If you're poor, quit doing stuff that poor people do and do what rich do. The top 10% of millionaires in America were interviewed and the one correlation that they all had was insane amounts of integrity, honesty, and work ethic.

They did not wait around for someone to help them, they were not born with it, they did it themselves.
THANK YOU JAMMY!

I was about to say something similar. Right on.

This reminds me of the fubared luxury tax back in the 80's. Crybabies thought that if they taxed things like yachts it would work out for the poor. Wrong! It ended up with wealthy people not buying as many yachts and this meant less blue collared workers having jobs and less taxes collected from the earnings. Stupid people never learn.

It’s like being fat or poor. If you do what fit/fat people do you too will become fit/fat. The same is true for wealthy people. Whats next? Hating super models?

No shit he pays less percentage wise than his maid. It's simple math...ITS A PERCENTAGE, regresive taxes dont make you pay less just because the percentage is lower if you made 450million and paid the same taxes any normal person does you'd just fucking quit because there'd be no point in trying due to the amount of taxes. If he paid 5% of his income in taxes which is far less than anyone actually pays he's still paying 2.25 million a year...thats more than most people reading this will make in a lifetime.
It's not my fault or his fault you can't manage your money any pay high credit rate or get a shitty job. Shut the fuck up its not his fault, because of him there's hundreds of thousands of people having a job...if it weren't for him you wouldn't have a god damn job to pay taxes on in the first place.
The people who believe this are seriously fucking dumb. The top 1% of the richest americans pay more than 50% of the taxes...this is ridiculous. This is the problem with our sociey..what would you do if you could have his home. How about bust your ass like he did to get to the top...and giving it to charity yea that'd be good...a fucking waste. Invest in something profitable so it helps everyone else too.

Had a re-think about this vid, the issue is not about the guy making money, we all need to make money to survive, it's the way his company supposedly comes in and makes cuts and sacks people.

Their argument against this would be that the company they have just purchased was underperforming and needed to be streamlined.

i think i'll go back to just making stupid comments

I think many of the posters here believe that everything wall street PE firms do is harmless. This is a uninformed opinion that comes from lack of experience. It is true that in many cases these companies are in need of a White Knight, but for every White Knight there is a Black Knight. Once you are no longer living in your parents home, and they are not supplying a financial cushion, and you own a house, and have a family your opinions of what a PE firm is doing with your health care, your paycheck, or your job, you may notice a parallax shift in your opinions of this issue.

I'm not against capitalism or personal wealth , just how they obtain it, and how they use it. Many wealthy individuals use their wealth for the improvement of all of mankind, and yes even those who will never get near the top.

And here is a wake up call for everyone who thinks they are going to live like this guy by just working hard. Just stick to playing the lottery, you will have better odds. There is only so much room at the top, and those at the top don't want to share the position. But I wish you all luck and prosperity.

Here is just part of why I know a little bit about this subject:

The first company I worked for was taken over by multinational, and I left because they were going to close the plant and move the MFG overseas.

The second company I worked for was targeted in a hostile takeover by a wall street Junk Bond group ( now called Private Equity Firms), in an attempt to break the company apart and sell its assets. This was due to my company acquiring another similar company, so they did not have enough cash to buy back their own shares. Poison Pill strategies were implemented to protect the company, and all efforts failed.

In the end over 26,000 people lost their jobs, and five committed suicide, many lost everything they had. The assets of the company went up for auction, and the rest was taken to landfills. It was acknowledged later that the entire reason for the takeover was to pay for a house and Yaht being built in France. Those were completed anyway, because the guy had the money all along.

The third company I worked for was taken over by a large multinational company and most employees were laid off. This large multinational is now in serious trouble, and its share price is below $3.

pod

I too have been affected by the "buy out" and "takeover" theme.

I worked for a medical diagnostic computer manufacturer, owned by a very big co (Medtronic) they sold the company to GE and we were all promised no change of benefits, pay, or job loss....three months later...they moved the entire operation overseas, not ONE person kept their job!

Then it was Parke-Davis, who was acquired by Phizer, who (to make a long story short) packed up and moved out of town, because...(as the "story" goes) they didn't get the tax breaks they wanted from the state! A multi billion dollar co whining about an insignificant amount of money! Displacing over 10,000 employed people in a smallish community (Ann Arbor MI) 2500 outright employees (most earning 6 figures) the rest in sub-contract, service and temp.

The trickle down effect has not yet even been fully realized, but you can see the for sale signs on the lawns of damn near every other house on every street!

Where will it all lead? It's going to be one helluva ride no doubt!

Damn. Please tell us where you work now. I want to now whether I should be dumping my stock. And if I work at the same place as you, quit your damn job. Some people are just born losers, and you sound like you need a major horseshoe rammed up your ass for luck.

Why don't you just start your own business?
lwboy - Well I kinda was a born loser. My father was a dangerous and violent alcoholic, my brother was, and still is a violent and dangerous autistic. We had a farm in VT, and little money. I know what it means to be hungry, and to have almost nothing, and yet I knew many who had much less.

I WORKED my way through school and college to get a degree in EE despite the fact my high school education was inadequate (due to all of the violence it was difficult to study). No drinking, no drugs, no vices for me, as I had seen enough of that.

I have worked VERY hard my entire life and have purchased a house, which I own outright, and I don't have a penny of debt. Nothing was ever given to me, because I did not have family or friends that had anything to give.

I don't want pity or praise, but I do know what it means to work up from poverty. I admit I have never been all that lucky, but I keep on keeping on.
Most people who have been through what I have been in just my first 20 years of life would have; what do they call it now (PTSD), but I do not. Through clean living, clean thinking, and hard work I have survived poverty.

BUT.....

Please send that horseshoe over as soon as you can, I could use some luck. But I KNOW that I could be much worse off, I've seen it, and lived it.

it seems that you have had a rough ride, no doubt about it. but let's look at the 3 amazing americans Abe Lincoln, Samuel Langhorne Clemens and Ben Hogan. if you read their biographies the hardships tragedies and failures seemed overwhelming, but it wasn't. i think adversity tends to reveal character rather than build it....it's like being really fast, either ya got it or ya don't

i dont give a shit about people born to power and privilege i cant think of any i admire....they live in a different world..let 'em, i've attended expensive private
schools, i can spot em a mile away....like the 6th sense except i see assholes

podman - You don't want praise, but I think you deserve it. The deck is stacked against some people and they start at different points, and you sound like you have overcome that. Keep going. I am not a trust fund baby or anything, but have had a very stable and "normal" family life and that certainly warps my opinion as I forget how hard others might have to work to get to the same point. And luck really is a factor.

Some on this stream ask if Kravis is happy. A study in the paper a while back said people with huge wealth are on general more happy as a group, but not any happier than the happy people without wealth. So people are more likely to be happy if they are rich, but if they are poor and happen to be happy anyway, they are just as happy.

How many times have
You heard someone say
If I had his money
I could do things my way

But little they know
That it's so hard to find
One rich man in ten
With a satisfied mind

Once I was waitin'
In fortune and fame
Everything that I dreamed for
To get a start in life's game

Then suddenly it happened
I lost every dime
But I'm richer by far
With a satisfied mind

Money can't buy back
Your youth when you're old
Or a friend when you're lonely
Or a love that's grown cold

The wealthiest person
Is a pauper at times
Compared to the man
With a satisfied mind

When my life has ended
And my time has run out
My friends and my loved ones
I'll leave there's no doubt

But one thing's for certain
When it comes my time
I'll leave this old world
With a satisfied mind

How many times have
You heard someone say
If I had his money
I could do things my way

But little they know
That it's so hard to find
One rich man in ten
With a satisfied mind
oney won't give you youth when your old, or buy you a a love that's grown cold.

"RICH BASTARD" MAKES "INSANE" CHRISTMAS OFFER

by Ben Down and Phil McCavity, Finance correspondents

THE world's wealthiest man has shocked Wall Street with his latest headline-grabbing move.
Lenny Kravitz, who insiders say has amassed a personal fortune of more than $800 trillion dollars through his Swedish Cruise Liner entertainments business, this week made a surprise offer to buy the United States of America.
The audacious takeover bid - massive even by his own stratospheric standards - comes hot on the heels of Kravitz's $40 billion acquisition earlier this year of Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice and former World Bank boss Paul Wolfowitz.
A 2006 bid for President Bush fell through at the eleventh hour when advisors said thetarget was "overvalued" at $24 dollars.
Kravitz Corporation vice-president Samuel Samuelson III said: "It has alwaysbeen our intention to add The United States to our portfolio if it became available. Mineralresources alone represent a major opportunity for growth, as does the substantial real estate included in the package. Of course, there would have to be a certain amount of downsizing with regard to the human population. At this stage, we would envisage around 98% of human resources being offered voluntary relocation to countries with falling birth rates - Tibet, Iraq and Afghanistan have expressed an interest in accommodating surplus. Anyone not taking up this generous relocation package, would, I'm afraid, have to be gassed."
A spokesman for the Federal Reserve said: "There may be minor legal and technical difficulties to be ironed out, but Mr Kravitz's track record is pretty much exemplary, and he always provides the template for good business models."
Th United States is said to be currently "giving close consideration" to the bid. Over 20 people have been consulted about the demographical implications, including Tom Cruise.
Democrat leader in the Senate, Mitchell "Mad Mitch" Gopherstrangler, sounded a note of caution.
"Kravitz is a gold-plated fuckpig," he told the Times. "But as long as I get sent somewhere like Hawaii, I don't give a shit."

While I'm against blatent greed and don't care for people chopping up business for profit I can't hold anything against people who have a lot of money by working hard for it. That guy does not sit on his butt and collect money I can guarentee you that. He probably doesn't spend a lot of time enjoying what he has. People who live for money rarely do.

And what the people they interviewed said they would do with the money was no better than what is being done with it now. The rich may get a lot of undeserved tax breaks but a lot of what I see here is just typical jealousy from the have nots toward the haves of the world. There will always be the rich and there will always be the poor. That's just life.

Less is more

That is my mantra, and the name of my sailboat-Lesismor.

I was born with such opportunity but saw the error in my father's ways. He offered what he gained, and all was hard-earned. At one time or another during his life each of his four sons turned on him before he lost it all...leaving him no wealth, or love.

He changed, and we returned, three of us at his bedside during his last breath (and the fourth, his namesake, absent by circumstance, not choice).

My Father gave me this wealth, despite his efforts: I learned from him that the pursuit of wisdom leads to inner peace; health we take to the grave; and love lives beyond death. All else is at another's whim.

I have lived a blessed life and currently earn US$22.60 an hour. I have a mortgage on the home in which I and my loved ones live and own my "toys". Nobody other than those who have agreed to repay my offerings owe me anything.

This man is wealthy. Many of us aren't wealthy in this manner, but are rich in life. I don't want his money, or his life.

I see a lot of "sorry asses" in this room, and have refrained from commenting much, choosing rather to enjoy the videos than to participate in the character assassination that goes on in here.

What I do observe is that you sorry asses have a lot to offer, for demonstrate cognitive thought (though too often ego driven). If improving the world in a real sense was as important as acquiring the "first post" on this website, the effort you put forth here would make one hell of a lot more difference where it really matters; be it your bottom line or comforting a lost child as he or she succumbs to one of the many ills of this world...whatever gives your life meaning.

Instead of hovering over this website for whatever pitiful thrill I might get, I'll turn to the nearest living thing in my environment and love it, and feel its love. From that I realize what life is.

That greedy old cunt who was Kravis.

It's mostly the poor mindset that eats junk food. I doubt Kravis eats that garbage.

I have met some very wealthy people and the one thing they have in common is they almost never sit on their asses and do nothing. Maybe a few days here and there on vacation but if you compared their schedule to anyone else's it would be very humbling.

Rich successful people are not lazy. They might have lazy trophy wives or spoiled shit kids like Paris Hilton but not them. They are usually the ones eating healthy, exercising, and are much more positive people to be around than most of the whiners we see all over the place.

A small minority have the big wealth, everyone else hangs around waiting for the scraps.

It goes back to the basic communist/capitalist argument.

What capitalisim does do is make money the most important thing in peoples lifes, when it should be other things like; mowing your lawn or carving some new chess pieces or inventing a non-hangover alcoholic drink or spending more time with your wife or lover or both and eating more, walking around places and drinking from rivers.

The problem with many who have wealth is, that they are just like those who do not have wealth, they don't know what to do with it. If I had it I know exactly what my new energy research lab would be working on.

Really.

Articles like that make me insane.I dont pretend to know what goes on in congress, but me paying a greater precentage of tax making 40k a year than that jerkoff. How is that?
Now let me tell you all what I think. I'm sure it doesn't matter to most of you, but here it is anyway.
Such a blatant display of inconceivable wealth is wrong. It's purely wrong to spend millions of dollars refurbishing a fucking BARN, when there are little children in this world who are cold, who are hungry, who have no place to live, who have no clothes, who have nothing. It is wrong, and if I were a religious person, I would call it a sin.
There are those who state that poor people "whine", and if only they would get off their ass, they too could enjoy the luxeries and wealth. It ISN'T true. There are many millions of people who are victims of circumstance, and are not afforded any such opportunities to partake in wealth or luxeries. They are forced, through no fault of their own, to suffer indignities and poverty. And there are those of us that work hard, every single day, just to be able to enjoy the comfort of having a decent home and enough food to eat for their children.
Don't come at me with that bullshit that we could all be just as wealthy as this fuckstick if we wanted to. He was born into money, he was raised with wealth, and he was given the opportunity to easily turn it into a revolting amount of money that is not necessary for one person to be in charge of. Or even an entire country, in some instances.
If I had even one tenth of his wealth, I would use at least some of it to help others. Call me idealistic, call me a dreamer, but don't call me a liar. I would help people less fortunate than myself.
TWO fucking golf courses? On one property? Please. Cut it down to one, and those tens of thousands of dollars could have helped any number of people who are struggling to raise children, working hard every day, make a better life for their families. Don't even begin to preach to me about these people being misrepresented. They are selfish, they are greedy, and they are out of control. It is fucking rediculous.

yeah randal, guess I got carried away there. But man, it's enough to make a person ponder the injustice of it all. This is nothing but pure gluttony. I think of the basics needs of a human being. Shelter, food, warmth, rest. Basically, eat, sleep, shit, stay out of the weather, and you'll be fine. A few luxeries here and there if you can afford them certainly wouldn't be out of the question. But people like this, all I can say is, wow, how do they sleep at night.
LOL! I'm guessing some smart ass is going to tell me, "they sleep very well, in their multi million dollar homes, their egyptian cotton sheets, their king size beds, their pure silk pj's", etc. Probably they do. Maybe I'm the idiot. Oh well.

Verrrrry interesting thread....went from deep, to funny, to deep, to funny again, and then back. Liked the funny stuff.

Kravis is Kravis...he is entitled to his lifestyle, regardless how envious (not jealous) I/we might be by his favored status.

Bill Gates and his wife have been similiarly gifted, though their fortune gained is more obvious to most of us - exceptional intelligence combined with serendipitously wonderful timing. And now they sponsor charities and enormous programs to serve the needy.

But I don't think they are selling any of their homes or giving up anything of their priveleged lifestyle in the process of following those goals. But we can love them because of their well publicized service to those who are much, much, muuuuuuuuch less fortunate.

I haven't bothered to research Kravis' contribution to the needy...perhaps it is non-existent, perhaps great, and perhaps anonymous (as many wealthy choose to do in order to keep from an onslaught of appeals from an endless list of needy causes)...doesn't matter.

While I can be appalled at "conspicuous consumption", I have to recognize the emotion that is working in me is envy. And I could say, "if only I had his wealth, I would do...................(fill in the blank with some wonderful action to cure cancer, rescue the needy in Biafra and Darfur, fund housing for the homeless, rescue programs for the underpriveleged, drug rehab and counseling programs, and an endless list of other mother loving/tree hugging/child care invoking/hapless and hopeless people helping...all them good things).

In fact, history suggests otherwise. How many millionaires from lotteries have done such things, versus how many have simply pissed away everything and ended up owing once again? And what have we heard about giftgiving from those others who may have been more responsible in handling their newfound fortune? Human nature is wonderfully predictable - we have our Mother Teresas, but they are remarkable in their rarity.

Anyway, FTB, or anyone else....define "greed" for me. I'm guilty, if that means I need to find someone less fortunate than me and dedicate a portion of my financial status to raising that person closer to my level. On the other hand, while I lack for little, I know of others who have much more....so should they not do the same for me and mine?

More to the point.... who decides what is "greed"? Isn't that so subjective, and isn't this video simply attracting the critical views of just about everyone, since none of us are in Kravis' category? Let's just get together and beat the figurative snot out of him. That's the message. I don't agree.

But I do envy his riches and hope he helps others....what I really want is all his money, and then I - moi - me - can ordain what wonder I might be disposed to bestow on others...or not. Hmm. Not objective at all.

Well....third wine does it everytime.

Chaz, Not many people in my daily life understand the difference betwix the meaning of the two words Envy and jealousy. or even bother to try and differentiate the two meanings (however small they may be!)

Thank for the indication above. We here expect no less from you!! :)
Hi chaz. I already defined "greed". Two golf courses. On one private property. Surely, that could fall into the greedy category, by anyone's standards.
I guess my problem is, I can't get around the fact that some people on this earth have so much that they can waste and waste and splurge and overindulge themselves to the point it is almost mind boggling. And on the other end, there are kids who go to bed at night hungry and cold. I'm not saying Kravis in particular needs to feed those kids, or Bill Gates. It's just hard to understand how or why, in our development as a species, there could be such a wide gap.
There is a difference between you or I donating a portion of our income to help those in need, and someone like Kravis doing so. If I donated some of my income, I would be taking away from basic necessities for myself, or my kids. Kravis sure ain't gonna be coming up short for the electric bill if he gave some away. And maybe he does help others, I don't know. Could be he's a saint in disguise.

chaz, upon reading your post again, you do make some very good points. There is of course some envy involved, we are all human. We would all like for our lives to be as secure and comfortable, as luxurius, maybe even as extravagent as Kravis. It does have an attraction that none of us can totally deny wishing we had at one point or another. But coming from a very middle class, "no waste", childhood (my mother re-uses paper towels, tea bags, and foil), and an equally, necessarily, frugal adult existance, (although, I would like to point out, I do not go so far as to use a tea bag twice, and paper towels are only good the one time for me), it's so very difficult to understand this particular brand of waste and wealth. I admit, I am not the least bit knowledgable about wealth, the use of wealth, the freedom of wealth, or the mis-use of wealth. It is out of my realm. But I do, truly, believe I would try to help other people if I had HIS kind of wealth. I wouldn't waste it on so many superficial and unnessary things. Maybe you have to be raised the way I was to think that way. Being born into wealth would give you a different perspective on the matter.
Later.

So do you think that anyone of the poor/middle class people interviewed wouldn't want to make his $450 Million/year? Its jelousy thats it. The problem with the arguement aganist capitalism is that it limits the options of people up and comming. OK, so you don't think that someone like Kravis should make $450 Million compared to these other people. But what about me? Here is a snapshot of my life and expectations:

B.S. Chemical Engineering - 5 years
M.S. Materials Engineering - 2 Years
PhD Materials Engineering - 3 years est (still working on it)
PE (Engineering Licence) - 5 years est (still working on it)

I am currently an engineering consultant making $100/hour and when I get my PhD that will go to $500/hour.

I hope to start my own company in biotechnology (my thesis work), which is big bucks. So, with all the work that I have put in, should I not have the right or the chance to make Kravis type money just because other people don't have the same income. People make their choices, and its wrong for someone who didn't put in the effort to try to squash the efforts of someone who did.
I think the point here is the monumental amount of money in question, just how much is too much for one person?

You sound like someone who deserves the money you earn. The question for you would be, how did you pay for that education? Work, save, student loan? Or the silver spoon in mouth easy way? As in the Henry Kravis family money way.

Something tells me, with the type of commitment involved in your "snapshot" you are a hard working son of a gun and probably paid for every penny of your own education! Good luck in your biotechnology company.
Let's see by attending night school and working during the day, I would have my PhD in about 28 years.

People don't always have the choices that want or need. Congratulation's to you on your education, but don't start demeaning those who are less fortunate for achieving less, when they have so little to begin with. The the poor have every right to envy the opportunities afforded to this man.

A few years back on a job site (millionaires house) they had a gardener (a few actually) that was a young lady in her late twenties, pruning roses all day long in this ridiculous looking metal fenced garden, we got to talking and she was kind of bummed about the pay ($9 hr) for getting her fingers stuck by thorns all day. I said "well you should get some college or tech school" to that she told me "Ah, I have a PhD. in forensic science from the University of Michigan" can't find a job!

feurstjd, such a hard screen name to get right, hope I did. You are obviously very intelligent, and made opportunities for yourself. I wish you well, and hope you see your dreams. Intelligence is a natural attribute though, not everyone is thusly endowed. Not everyone could attain those degrees, even if given the time, opportunity, and finances. And there are those who ARE capable, but have no opportunity to do so. It isn't quite so black and white as you state.
And I hope, with all your credentials, that your misspellings are merely a result of typing quickly, with a passion for your topic. With all the college papers and thesis you must have written to date, I'm sure you're a little more careful when not on Glumbert.

FTB - don't know if you'll track back to this thread, but; I am what I call a "recovering English Major". That's what it was in my undergraduate years. Learned to love the language, and have a care for spelling. Few do, I think. And I do mispell...or is that, misspell? Love the language.

In these times of texitng and emailing, shorthand spelling is happening. And punctuation and use of upper case/lower case has become largely ignored. (Mostly by accountants, I think - bottom liners w/o appreciation for the kind arts).

Hate it. Love English, as it is the most expressive tongue in wide use in the history of mankind. We have, maybe, three ways to say anything, maybe four, maybe five, etc. There is no word for "home" (as contrasted to "house") in most every other language...and that is only one example.

But I run on....knowing there is a Brit audience for these comments, BTW, now that he has moved from New Hampshire to England, does anyone know what Bill Bryson is doing these days (my english-speaking and english admiring and english historian and wonderfully entertaining and informative english writing bookwriter)?
