That's comedy gold. Yanks just don't understand sarcasm and wit. If there's not a cream pie being jammed in someone's face they don't laugh. Get a dog up ya !
"Jan Kaas" (pronounced Yahn KHays... Anglicized to Yankees) from the English stereotype of the Dutch settlers: Everyone seemed to have a Christian name of Jan (John in English) and eat cheese (kaas) with everything (cheese with cheese, too, I suppose). Fitting and a colo(u)rful history... A real Yankee Doodle Dandy.
Some (admittedly ONLY some) 'Amuurcans' do get sarcasm and wit, but it seems what many start to feel uncomfortable with is using it in the context of Jesus.
They'll happily poke fun at other religions. Or even go to war with them.
I reckon they're not quite sure how their increasingly fundamentalist religious views on Christianity can be brought into the real world without making themselves out to be the same religious zealots they purport to be raging against!
Just a thought...
PS - Bush went to war after 'consulting higher power' so they say... was that Daddy or God?
Let me get this straight...because an 'Amuurcan' doesn't fall over laughing over a little clip with some dry British humour in it you automatically turn it into a rant on Americans, religion, war and whatever else? Come on man, have some more sense than that. I've served on deployments with Brits, Aussies, Frenchmen, Irishmen, Canadians etc and we all got along great, singing (or trying to) eachothers anthems piss drunk in a local bar. Never once did I meet one who was so anti-American as most of you are. Get the fuck over it and quit taking your aggression out on America on a glumbert post. How fucking weak is that?
i'm an american, born here, sometimes not proud of it, Bush sucks, but this was funny, again bible thumpers, get a life, damn, there's no god, no heaven, no hell, you die, thats it.
Devious - fair enough! Agree with you about people getting on together in the real world! Guess this is light hearted and should be taken as such!
I apologise.
If I'm honest tho I just can't help having a wee pop at somewhere where there's huge debate over whether Darwinian theory or Creationism should be taught in schools. Smacks of a little zealotry to me when one is being banned in favour of the other in some states...
Would you rather aggression was taken out on America by more direct means? Let's face it this IS only a forum after all and I know I'd prefer to engage in debate rather than fly planes into buildings, have the horror of blue on blue, or bomb the shit out of innocent civies.
One point tho - having lived and worked in the land of the free, even in Sparta, NJ, I'm certainly NOT anti american! It's a cool place and as far as I can see the main reason a whole bunch of US citizens (you're obviously excluded if you've served abroad) don't have passports is because the continent has every conceivable geography and climate to enjoy. You don't have to travel to see the physical world as it's pretty much all there for you. That being said I think it's beholden on as many citizens as possible of the current superpower, to at least go see what the rest of the world is like - their views may differ!
What I CERTAINLY AM is anti US foreign policy and strategy. Think you'll find that's what most informed people round the world think too. It's a great nation but ask yourself WHY it is that you're meeting many anti americans online? Even in the real world on a number of occassions I've met US travellers out in Asia who've sewn Canadian flags on their rucksacs as they don't wanna be singled out as US. That surely suggests something? These guys after all ARE making the effort to travel and tend to be spot on people!
And please DON'T give me any shit along the lines of, 'we don't have to care, we don't have to listen, we can do what we want to so suck it up'. You reap what you sow. Is that a biblical term..?
BTW in regards as what Americans think about foreigners who like to comment on our foreign policies - we don't have to care, we don't have to listen, we can do what we want to so suck it up, bitches!
I'm not even gonna touch the whole religious/ creationism thing, bro. I'm hardly the one to speak on it and would lack any real credibility. I just believe that people should live and let live. I guess that's pretty simple minded but oh well.
I always prefer debate to violence. But it's never really a debate, always just some inflammatory post directed at somebody who has no real power to change our foreign policy. What good does it do to vent at some average Joe about how fucked up his country's policies are? He can't do shit about it. I agree wholeheartedly with you about our current administration. Let me be the first to say Bush is a fucking moron and Cheany is just out to make a buck and my friends and fellow servicemembers are dying for it. Who has more to lose, me or you? I'm not saying you are wrong for being pissed but let's face it, you don't run the risk of dying for this pointless war.
As far as the sewing on of Canadian flags on rucksacks while traveling, I can't comment. I've never seen it myself but I'm sure it happens. I've been to many Asian countries and have never stepped foot in one where I felt compelled to hide my identity as an American. All the countries I've been to like us no more or less than Canadians. To the average Filippino or Thai, Korean etc. they don't know the difference and really don't care. Just my observation. Maybe they think that they're safer from being kidnapped or the target of a terrorist attack. Sad fact is they're not. Terrorists really don't care if you're Canadian or French or U.S. They kill their own people if they're not from the same religious sect. To them you are the infidel no matter if you have bars and stars or maple leafs on your backpack. Personally I think it's pretty sad somebody would dodge their nationality to try and please people. Why try to please people who are ignorant enough to dislike you just becuase of your nationality? Kinda smacks of old school racism if you ask me.
I hate ready laughed comedy. Those jokes are made for people who does not understand when to laugh. That itself takes the quality down. Otherwise it could have been a funny strip.
I like British comedy (NOT Mr. Bean, that limey asshole) with its subtle wit. That being said, this piece was pretty dry, even for British comedy. It doesnt mean that I'm an ignorant American, perhaps the setup was good but the finished piece fell on its ass.
i never think anything is a joke when it comes to god or the devil. i would rather be a bible thumper, when the end comes, my friends it will come. they make excuses about this warming thing, it is a warning, just like all the things going on in the world. there is no one worth voting for in the election either, which is more scary to me . well maybe not not.
carowinds, people like you scare the ever living shit out of me. do you think god wants you to be all solemn and sad? do you think he just wants you to sit around and criticize what other people find funny and call it blasphemy? actually, i almost hope that is what He wants...it would totally justify my renunciation of christianity.
bad things will happen whether "the end" is coming or not. to quote the great billy joel, "i'd rather laugh with the sinners than cry with the saints/the sinners are much more fun".
and to all of you arguing between the brits and the yanks, keep this in mind: arguing online is like being in the special olympics. even if you win, you're still retarded.
ps-nice use of "twat". you rarely see that word being used anymore.
Hello. Why don't you all just stop taking things so seriously. Any Jesus joke is made to either make the light hearted laugh until they pee their pants, or make the uptight so pissed off, they burst a blood vessel. Personally, I think Jesus laughs everytime he's made fun of. He sure as hell aint feeling sorry for himself.
