Critics of France and the French obviously have never spent time in that extraordinary country, its countrysides and villages, nor have they been warmed by the welcome extended by the French people, especially but not exclusively Provence, Burgundy, Midi Pyrenee, and Bordeau...keeping well away from the areas so frequented by us tourists.
Lovely and memorable, cultured and historic...beautiful by all measures.
And I am NOT French. Just one who totally enjoys nice people and nice places.
Exactly, whenever the french strike, it usually involves the trains or ferries or cheese/wine, there's a knock on affect to Britian, but i'm with them , they use their power and aren't afraid to use it.
The trade unions in Britian seem to have lost their power after the miners strikes in the 80's, but i'm no expert on this, it's just my opinion.
Hey Skids.....didn't the trade unions across the pond there kinda lose steam because of the whole Thatcher-thingy? I know she was tight with Reagan, who kinda declared war on organized labour in his way, in the U.S. at the time.
Labor Unions were a good concept but when you have 1 billion slave laborers in China and close to that in India you better make sure that they cannot compete with your business. Cheese and wine labour unions along with say Supermarkets all work because they are local or uniquely domestic so should be safe. With say Auto-manufacturers labour unions(UAW) or the USW(steelworkers) who compete with large operations outside the US(where labor costs are much lower and quality comparable or higher) in the long run they price themselves and the business along with it out of the game. These types of labor unions should be very limited and let the free-market reign.
I'm no expert , all i know is Thatcher privatized most of the public amenities, thus the Trade unions lost their power, this included closing the coal pits, which lead to riots, people started to buy their council houses, Britain's economy boomed , well the rich got richer.
Spoke with a guy the other day who lived in Canada for 10 years, he said he loved it and there's alot of money out there? he cleared snow

And I am NOT French. Just one who totally enjoys nice people and nice places...not forgetting I was a paying for the privelege to be there.
Also...not forgetting I live on Cape Cod, where we learn how to deal with tourists (i.e., strangers from elsewhere who often view their temporary quarters as something "paid for", therefore something which they are free to abuse).
Leonard Cohen is a genius. He, Tom Waits and Bob Dylan (and to a certain extent Van Morrison) are the only songwriters worth listening to.
All the rest are total bullshit. When was the last time you heard anything that moved your bowels, brain, heart and sphincter like these guys can?
I am sure that the above mentioned songwriters would be pleased to know that they move your bowels and sphincter ... just what a songwriter wants to accomplisgh ... making someone take a huge dump ... you are weird
surfergirl...on this observation, please let me join you.
...(so far, only Chubby Checker and my proctologist has inspired my surging urge to purge...and perhaps that accordian player with that drippy Lawrence Welk band...ooooops..........even the memory is a laxative....)
non - non, don't do the "voulez vous couchez avec moi" deal....
- first, take a bath (probably you need that anyway)
- second, make sure your round-trip ticket to-and-from France is valid...you may give cause for the US to invalidate the second part.
- third, while you are there, tell them you are from Canada...that way, they won't blame us for your being rude, nor for not speaking French.
- fourthly - if you are allowed back into this country, hit your knees and thank god there is such a forgiving and tolerant society, such as the one you plead to rejoin.
Other than that, you should be fine (as in chopped into extemely small particles).
