this (above) is terrible "n of one" thinking.....i read in the Wall St Journal that 44% of the Americans think that New Mexico is not in the United States....OK, so a few Frenchmen don't know much about the solar system....big deal! Let's stop hating each other.......
rich, you watch. The next batch of videos proclaiming the stupidity of Americans will be riddled with comments about how ignorant and retarded Americans are. The fact of the matter is all societies contain a large quantity of ignorant minded citizens. These are people who could care less about the outside world. These are people who value their own well being over their societies well being. It's a fact you have to live with, but yes, I agree, stop with the bigotry.
The point isn't that the ONE french retard thought THE SUN REVOLVES AROUND THE EARTH, it's that 56% of the french audience are retards that all think this.
Oh my god I am so disappointed. I take back all those nice things I said about France on my other post. What an idiot!!!! I can't believe the friggin' audience didn't know either!!!! That's the worst part. Out of the entire audience, they were all idiots too!!!! But you know it doesn't surprise me, because the majority of t.v. watchers in France are kind of dumb. And in high-school you get placed in one of three tracks, literary, math
my post got cut off. Glumbert you suck.... to continue: math and science, or trade, and the literaries are really stupid. I know because I went to high-school in France right along side them.
why do't you just admit you love canuck and the two of you can run off together and happily bitch about the world forever, and leave the rest of us out of it. You already sound like an old married couple.
LOL You guys crack me up. It took me awhile to trip onto the banter, but you guys are the real stars of glumbert at this point! Just having fun, or is there some real hatred there? Wanting to find out keeps me coming back.
did ivanca42 say... "what stupid Frances" ??? maybe you should think about what you write before you try to make fun of somebody else.. Frances, hahaha retard.
dvan , sorry i am learning to speak english, i speak spanish sorry for make that mistake, i am going to question something: are you frances? jajajajajajajaja
if the question had been, "what revolves around France?". . .he would have said, "the universe" and according to them he would have gotten it correct. . .
French people (most of those i know anyway) don't look at a blooper and say "AHAHAH THEY SUCK SO MUCH THIS COUNTRY MUST BE FILLED WITH STUPID PEOPLE" This was a funny vid, that's it ^^ Just for info podman: yes it's a translation problem, the question is "what gravitates around the earth", not rotates ;-)
Most of those you know? And how many is that? a handful? Are you willing to say those handful of people have the same opinion of millions? If you're going to make such a broad statement, at least have the decency to back it up. Saying that is almost as bad as calling French people stupid because the handful in this video couldn't figure out the sun didn't revolve around the earth.
I spent 19 years in France so i know a bit more than a handful of people here... all i'm saying is that extrapolating what you see here to a whole country is dumb, and i think we agree on that point. And and the "handful" of french people i know (Yes i don't know everybody in France alright) don't do that.
Thank you for the translation. I suspected there was a translation problem here. Actually I don't think the French are any dumber than we are.
I was talking to a co-worker during a solar eclipse, and he asked me: "What happens when the sun passes between the earth and the moon?"
I just said: "The end"
Don't forget that many high school graduates here in America, cannot find the United States on a world map. I don't even want to now how we are doing on Astronomy.
Well, becasue ur ar not gud spellers mybe. becasue your leaders dragged you into an illegal war that the french had the sense to stay out of? becasue many Yanks could not find France on a map. Of France.
Speaking of wars we didn't need to get involved in, why have we saved them from the Germans twice? It's a good thing we're barbarians. The rest of the world pretends they disdain the US but they always come running when the shit hits the fan.
wow i didn't know there was someone here who actively saved France from the germans.. and twice by the way!! You should remind me how all that happened old pariah! hotpink2011 i don't think french people see americans as stupid people, we just don't share the same views on religion and politics.
Oh dear God. Okay, 1 guy not knowing is amusing, but not a huge deal. But my jaw hit the keyboard when the audience got it wrong!
That's it, no more jokes about Americans being dumb. Europeans had a good run, but now you've been exposed. The jig is up. You're all frauds. Go sit in the corner with a dunce cap, Europe. Or at least kick France off the continent (again).
lol please dont let france smear the name of all of europe! haha only messing around. Loving lwboy's comment about finding france on a map - this is true haha americans need to be taught geography of the earth, not just their continent :) (*this is a very general statement i am sure there are at least 2 americans who have studied geography and can find Ulan Bator on a world map*)
I think Ulan Bator is probably how a lot of 'suthern state amuurcans' spell alligator isn't it?
To be fair on 00:48 Sophie DOES say the correct answer. I find her midly erotic. Probably because she's wearing glasses. And is French. The look of total contempt she gives, along with an almost imperceptible shake of the head... Ooh La, La!
In most countries, people who actively beat a path to watch live programs being filmed tend not to be the sharpest knives in the drawer! Gerry Springer anyone? That being said for the entire audience to not get it...
it's amazing to me that there are actually people that are this stupid! they should sit everyone down over the age of 12, ask them the same question and if you get it wrong, BANG, you're dead because you're are too stupid to make a contribution to this world!
Not to stick up for the French, but doesn't just about everything out there "rotate around" earth? They didn't say "orbit" or, was it lost in the translation? I guess it doesn't really matter though...the audience was just as ignorant...a sad commentary of the level of intelligence of the majority of the human race!
Two things you need to know here: - The TV audience of this particular show IS stupid (always has been). - The way this question was posed is not properly translated, "gravite autour de" is not "to rotate around" as this clip has you believe.
Not many here study psychology, I take it? Group think. One person puts down the wrong answer, person next to him sees, doubts himself, puts down wrong answer to match the guy next to him. So on and so forth until majority have the wrong answer, though seeing as the moon was the second choice, not everyone went along. Its not stupidity, its self doubt and the desire to not be wrong. Happens alot when people are in groups. You can see people looking at each other, and probably discussing it when they pick up the "controllers."
In bootcamp I saw a kid forget his own mother's name becuase the drill instructors rattled him so much. This guy doesn't look like he handles pressure all that well. Probably just had a brain fart.
How about a little help from our French heritaged friends on our northern border...
My high school french used "tourner" to say "rotate"...but "revolver" was also used to say "rotate" in some circumstances, which would make it difficult for non-french-speaking people to see the difference between circling something, and simply turning on an axis.
So....could it be that "graviter" has been used to assure it is understood what is meant? After all, gravity is the very force that produces the rotation meant in this question.
Having visited France a number of times, I can not support general criticism of its people, who were universally genial and accepting. They have had similar issues with their leadership as we here. Someone noted that the educational quality of attendees at these sorts of shows may not be indicative of the general population....I am forced to agree, though this was a puzzling event. Generally, we don't look all that good when compared to our European friends, education-wise.
Why the discussion about how it translates into English? It was the French version of the show, they didn't translate it into English then back into French! French show, French constestant, French audience, they all still got a simple question wrong!
What I was suggesting was that "graviter", in French, actually might mean "to revolve"...to the French contestant and the French audience. Previous postings had questioned the use of that verb in the question as it was posed. If, as I tend to think, "graviter" is indeed the proper term to denote something circling around something else, then the contestant could not have been mislead by how the question was phrased. And he (and "they all") got a wrong answer to a simple question, as you noted.
Well, I managed to switch words here....please substitute "to rotate" in the last posting in place of "to revolve". I am a recovering English major and am abashed at my oversight.
Let us end the thread now. Americans and French people are all very dumb. There are no exceptions, paint both countries entirely with the same brush. Canadians however are all smart, funny, charming and smell really nice. (except those of us from Quebec of course - all about as sharp as the edge of town.)
The translation is incorrect, but in French the question was correct--"what REVOLVES around the Earth?" The only answer is Moon from the options.
To rotate is to spin. To revolve is to orbit. Mars rotates on it's own axis and revolves around the Sun. For that matter, Earth, Moon, Venus and Sun also rotate (spin), though at very different rates. Visit Your Local Planetarium and you'll be amazed at what else we know about space!
It could not of course be that the French audience thought "He's seriously going to ask the audience...this guy doesn't deserve the right answer *Pushes Button B* "
