what a rush. you think these people have day jobs? or spoiled rotten daddy's boys with all the money in the world and just broke free from the picket fence?
OK That is pretty cool but it should be gliding base jump, but just doens't have the same ring
11 months ago
You have an accurate point, but to have the authorities re-name non-powered flight as gliding, and follow up with renaming the centuries of misnomers (e.g. Flying Squirrels, Flying Fish, Flying Squid...), will probably only happen when monkeys fly... er... glide out of said autuorities' butts. How they got their in the first place is a mystery in itself.
I wonder where they are jumping, that place looks awesome
11 months ago
I am going to guess the mountains are in the South Island of New Zealand.

Too much $$ and time on thier hands....

Watta waste. Good production value though, and the sound track was nifty.

(Red Wings are great)

They coulda crashed into the side of one of those mountains, and wound up looking like a Picasso painting, I wouldn't have given a flying fiddlers fuck about it.

They would have had it coming to them.

I'd love to sit one of these bozos down, hand him a .357 Magnum revolver, insert one live round, spin the cylinder and randomly snap it shut and hand it to him. There ya go. Start playing. What? Not "THRILLING" enough for him? Okay. I'd insert one more round, hell, maybe even ANOTHER one, making a total of three chambers filled, out of six. Spin the cylinder. Snap it shut. Hand it to him. There. Go ahead, THRILL-SEEKER.

(Just let me set up the camera first, for all of your fans)

The one thing that annoys me with this sort is that others have to risk THEIR lives to rescue them when it goes wrong. I strongly believe that if you want to do sh t like this, sorry, assumed risk, you screw up, no rescue, no wasting space at the hospital. Darwin in action.
HERE-HERE!!

(RedWingsAreGreat)
Sorry to all those who don't see the sheer exhileration of this clip.

Many extreme base jumpers / skiiers sign non-rescue agreements precisely because they are doing something so dangerous. They take the responsibility on their own shoulders, acknowledge the risks and don't want to waste emergency rescue resources.

Plus these guys have NO death wish, you'll probably find they have a greater appreciation for life than many of us who never push the envelope as far as they do.

They live for this stuff - they don't want to die for it. Let's face it, these guys are seen as nuts by those who couldn't do what they do!

BTW a guy called Felix Baumgartner is worth checking out - he added to this gliding concept slightly and managed to glide across the English channel!

Now Spec Ops forces use his invention to get across enemy lines undetected
11 months ago
Hah??

"Enemey lines"???

WHOA!!

mako, ol' buddy, I have to disagree with ya here: if you can find me ONE example in this day and age where there are "enemy lines", please tell me.

Because I always thought that Gulf War I was the last gasp of uniformed armies squaring of against one another, in an open battlefield (and even THAT was screwed up, to a point).

And while I have no problem with folks engaging in "exhilirating" activities, I just can't see how recklessly placing your own life in danger, in a voluntary and pointless manner, can be commended.

Maybe I'm just a little too jaded because I've had my own close calls as many times as I have and I appreciate being around to torment my fellow man.....but these were occupation-related, not because of by choice.

Personal outlook can be a bitch, I guess.
You choose your occupation and these guys choose their hobby. What's the difference?
I'm at least openly envious... sounds to me like you wish you had the balls to do that, but not the balls to admit it.
C- alright, fair point, 'enemy lines' the wrong term. Covert insertion a better term?

Anyway, that wasn't really my point it was only an aside. The main point was the non rescue agreements.

This may look reckless but you know for sure these guys'll try and limit the risks as far as possible ie only chosing drops where the glide ratio is sufficient for them to make the distance needed to avoid becoming a rock-based picasso. There is some science involved!

It is a case of each to his own and I am aware these extreme sports carry more risk so I can see both points of view - the pissed of rescuer and the extreme base jumper chasing the rush.

I am pretty certain the SAR crew sent out to find the father and two kids halfway up a snowed in mountain in trainers, shorts and t-shirts with a knapsac full of sandwiches and nothing else feel this is just as big a waste of resources but would we argue they shouldn't be rescued?

Most often the SAR crews respond to people who find themselves in situations bought on my ignorance and idiocy. When it goes wrong for extreme sporters then it's more often body recovery I am guessing...
freeskier:

Nope.

I'm just just particular about where I decide to risk my "balls", based on sound and competant judgement, that's all.

You wanna go and potentially plaster your brains all over a mountainside for a "thrill", then that's your issue.

But if that happens, I'll just simply sit back and say "Fuckhead had it coming."
Mr. Mako:

I see your point and you actually make a pretty decent argument defending what these....individuals....do.; still can't fathom it, though. But I suppose that's free will, right? Even if it's free will to do something like this, with ones own life.
Red Wings are great x 2
Fuckhead had it comming? jeez canuck, mate, rather die doing what i love to do rather than doing something that you think is a safe, legit form of entertainment, persay walking along a beach and having a coconut kill you. In other words, in case you attack the way i said this... id rather be the fuckhead that risks my own life, than have some other fuckhead wipe me out unexpectedly. You cant tell me you honestly believe driving or walking, every single day in built up, busy areas, is a safe form of living thinking you're going to be 100% safe. Heck if i knew what i was doing and i was base jumping with all the right training, id rather be jumping down cliffs alone everyday, than driving 1tonne metal machines around 80km ph with the distractions of the rest of the world. Just in my opinion, controlled environments are alot safer than suburban chaos. Theres plenty other ways you can end up looking like a picasso art piece than into the side of a cliff.
rabz:

I agree with you in one sense: yes, you CAN be injured or even killed by ANYTHING when you step outside of your front door....this is a given. BUT....my point is thus:

Why COMPOUND the risk, especially with something like shown in this particular video, that serves no purpose other than being a "hobby"? This is like taking up smoking, because what hell, we all have to die sometime, right? Being from Oz, you might appreciate this example: let's say I post a sign on the beach, that says "Danger! Shark-infested waters! Swim at your own risk!", and someone decides they STILL wanna go surfing to beat that Big Wave....but come back minus an arm, a leg and part of their torso.

Did they have it coming?

Or do I have to put up a similar sign for people in this video clip that says "Falling off this mountain can cause death! Jump at your own risk!"?

See my point? Where do you draw the line between "getting a rush"....and getting dead for the SAKE of a "rush"?

Sorry, Bruddah.
Red Wings are great
canuck bruddah, i sorta got a jist of your point, im sure it was in there somewhere, read it a few times and i kinda get lost a bit.. no offence taken i hope!

Basically, you draw a line, between 'getting a rush' or as others put it 'enjoying and being able to live life and do what ever you like in the guidelines of good will, sense and decency' and 'perhaps suffering the consequences of perishing' in whatever activity you choose in life through, what i like to call "Personal Risk Assessment."

Now with P.R.A there generally comes a time where theres an activity, hobby, event you want to participate in. Now im guessing youre the kind of guy that wouldn't base jump down the side of a cliff, because youre afraid you might find yourself part of its rocky infrastructure like a bug on a car windscreen. While this guy on the other hand, knows what he's doing and knows the risks hes taking, feels somewhat safe because he's experienced and hasn't hit a cliff yet. While i might go for a base jump/skydive in the near future.. you can leave me out of playing a game of icehockey, bundling into other monkeys armed with skate blades on thier feet and crashing into each other for the sake of a little black puck isn't my idea of entertainment. Oh well Que Sera, sera, were all different and have different opinions and idealogies, sorry for being a challenging nitwit. (debating isn't my niche) im still awake, thanks :P

C- I suggest you contract your statement to RWAG. Great time saver.
PERFECT!!

(RWAG)

He never DID stipulate I couldn't use acronyms, did he?

HA!
You obviously didn't read the fine print on the bet. It includes no contractions, acronyms, synonyms, and any other verbage that would detract from the humiliation associated with the loss of your beloved team. The new reader would not know what RWAG is.

I also didn't say you had to breathe after you lost, but you are still breathing.

Using RWAG is semi-welching on the bet. If you feel thats what you need to do to honor the bet in your mind then do it, but lets see what kind of man you are.

If I wanted to get into name calling, now is the time for me to bash those sorry ass bastards you call the Maple Leafs.....HA! It is going to take you another 25 days to return the volley!

Now that's taking advantage of a situation. BTW Maple Leafs are a bunch of ass bandits!

Per event, I bet a higher percentage of football, hockey, rugby, etc. events result in people going to hospital/requiring medical attention, yet I don't see you complaining about that?! In fact, if this guy screws up, he won't be wasting space in the hospital and certainly won't need rescuing. In both cases, people are taking known risks that they could get severely hurt. At least in this case, he's not selling the potential gore for profit.
Whoa, im fully agreeing with you there. 100%, what a total valid point you have there throb, lol.
Funny how no one else has agreed with this statement, lol, some people are so biased i guess. Swallow your rocks boys, hes right, haha!
Very true. When you think about it, the sport with the mast fatalities every year? Golf. Not sure if it's because participants get hit by balls, lightening or are likely to be seniors, but there it is.
Yup - rocks swallowed - agree fully!

Talking of rugby, can the English hang onto the Webb Ellis in the face of the resurgent but surly French?

Vive le coup du monde!
syz...not sure, but looks like your clip had to do with mountain climbers, or an attempted rescue of them. Throb says (more or less) that the folks who dive off cliffs (or out of perfectly functioning airplanes) are BETTER people than moutain climbers because they DIE if they make a mistake...and no others need to go in harm's way to save them, 'cause they are DEAD.

Got to admit, there is a certain logic there. Now, if we could convince mountain climbers, extreme skiiers, bungee jumpers, and similar other gratuitously-high-risk takers to switch to some form of skydiving....well, we would all be better off in the long run...and the world's gene pool would be improved in the process.

Ah well.....just random thoughts after reviewing the mind-numbing videos over recent days. Watching one Brit whale on another with a shovel did have certain redeeming qualities, albeit not enough to make it more than fascinating stupidity.
The thrill seeker caused the rescuer's death... I don't mind the thrill seeker biting the bullet, but good people paying the price while helping saddens me.
Thats the risks of being in a profession where you have too rescue people. Take the good with the bad.
First of all it was a practice rescue for training purposes. And believe it or not, they both lived the fall. Do some research before you lay down the concrete.

There's no death wish....I'm with Mako on this one.....I wish I had the control, discipline, self-confidence and wish for freedom that this individual obviously has.....what a huge life-affirming quest to embark on. so few of us live one minute of our lives. I have lived a few....the birth of my daughter...rappeling down a cliff.....getting an award for top cadet (yah, I know it's lame)....dancing in my kitchen....listening to the rain.....it's all about moments....my best moments have always been when i hurt the most inside emotionally (happily)...let me clarify....the hardest moments in life have given me the greatest benefit....when i have struggled or fought demons of pain, or imagined anguish (I say imagined because really...we don't suffer malnutrition, lack of water, etc. however we wade through our own perceived reality) damn, when I put my life in perspective like that I feel like I have no point....aw....shit ...anyhow....my little dramas have improved me....the good stuff only made me smile.

Not having spoken before, I just like to congratulate you on your most touching posting above , we are indeed living in a imbalanced world where our highs and lows are somewhat unimportant compared to people struggling to survive on a daily basis, their highs maybe the arrival of aid/food, I also believe that we are living a lie in the west, ours life are superficial and protected by the greed of man built over generations by the slave trade and the advance of technology giving unfair advantages over other races/countries.

It is all part of the evolution of man, where we are heading I do not know

skidmarks:

I', assuming that your post is on the level, and your questions are honest, so here goes:

The Detroit Red Wings are (as the name implies) a professional hockey team, based in Detroit, Michigan, U.S.A. The reason I keep typed "Red Wings are great", is because I lost a wgaer to Usedouchebag on these threads, because MY team, the Toronto Maple Leafs (representing, of course, Toronto, Ontario, Canada) lost to Detroit. I am required to do this for 30 days as part of my end of the bargain, and add it to each and every post I make. Both teams are part of the National Hockey League (or, NHL). All teams represent various cities in both Canada and the U.S.

P.S. Where ARE you at?
Canuck

yeh my questions were totally honest , i now understand thanks very much

i post on here as a swed, i actually live in Britain, but i have Swedish roots and feel swedish more than english

I don't follow the swedish hockey but i understand from past postings they are rather good.

Canuck you may believe that i only write sarcastic postings but i am infact a sensative soul like most and i believe in humanism, i am as straight as they come and also believe that most people are good in this world and i always give the benefit of the doubt.

ps: all i know of Canada is the lumberjack sketches of Monty Python, that ontario is meant to be a beautiful place as is Canada in general, you speak french in some parts and the lovely lady in the english patient is french canadian, oh and the Greenland shelf is melting which is going to raise sea levels and stop the gulf of mexico warming europe.

thanks for replying, happy thanks giving, something you share with americans?
LOL!

Thanks!

Yes, we share the same concept of Thanksgiving with our American neighbours, but on different dates. Their Thanksgiving Day will be coming up on Nov. 22nd. Yeah, the Lumberjack sketch in "Monty Python" is, I have to admit, hilarious. Where would any of us be without our stereotypes, right? LOL!

You seem like a decent person, and you've just made me realize something: You're in England; then you got rabz in Australia; then ya got people like me, Riza, Bill and a few others spread across Canada; then you got Randal, devious, streamlined, podman, usedouchebag and others spread across the U.S......

the Internet has truly made this a smaller world. Whether it's made it a "better" one is open to debate, but smaller definitely.

Such is life.

Thanks for the Holiday sentiments, by the way.

BTW, skids:

I commend you for your outlook on humanity, and being a "humanist"; it takes quite a strong faith to believe that people are inherently good, what with everything that's happening around us. As for me, personally, for a long time now I've come to believe in a simple philosophy:

People are a lot like machinery, in the sense that they are either a benefit....or a hazard.

If they're a benefit.....then they're not my problem.

Sounds somewhat jaded, or even cynical one might say.....but I keep reminding myself that it's practical.
Red Wings are great x 2

Maybe I’m in Denial about believing that all people are inherently good, or just wishful thinking

I suppose my humanistic beliefs are based on the nature nurture argument, babies are not born evil, they are born happy, loving, excitable, with good in them but then interaction beings!!!
Skid - you sound like a sane and nice character and yet I must disagree slightly!

Kids are born evil, horrendously noisy, smelly and expensive up until the point they have been humanised (normally around the age of 21yrs) at which point they become bearable. And have flown the nest.

I may be being a tad cynical but you get my point...

That was a great deal of reading. I'm kinda caught up, but not really back yet. I jacked my house, laid my floor, and have trim work next, which I hate. Anyway, I was taking a break from cleaning up, and kinda read through from where I left off.

Most of these latest Glumbert postings are pretty dull, and as for this one; I think what these guys are doing fine as long as they sign their do not rescue, and do not hose off any stains I may leave on the surface of the earth agreements.

I have jumped out of a perfectly good airplane in tandem with the instructor, and it was pretty cool, but once was enough for me. I will say that there is a kind of quieting of the mind that comes from doing something dangerous, and maybe that is why I like driving my car, and using my chainsaw. Many activities to be done correctly and with optimum safety, can be quite relaxing, and soothing.
Holy shit Pod! You da man!

Driving a car whilst using a chainsaw certainly qualifies as extreme but I'm not sure it's a sport??

How does one optimise safety in order to make this experience relaxing and soothing. LOL :-)
Yep! That should have been a 'or' not 'and'. But using both at the same time might be too much risk. I would rather jump out of that plane again.

Yes, it's got to really suck getting only 5.2 million, instead of 5.8. What on earth will they do! I for one, am glad the Canadian dollar is doing so well. I bet George W. Bush wishes he'd paid that lumber debt back a whole lot earlier.

Billy-B:

Holy cow! That's right! I never even thought of that! But like dixiebelle there said, I'm sure they'll still manage just fine. LOL!

dixiebelle:

Don't know who you are, but you just reminded me of something I've been meaning to post a spell back, in answer to my good buddy streamlined. See, I've made no secret about how little use I have for GWB, and streamlined has pointed out that my dislike for the Man has pretty well poisoned my whole outlook on the U.S. government as a whole...BUT...I will say this: the Canada-U.S. trade lumber dispute had been going on for at least a couple of decades, encompassing a slew of Presidents and Prime Ministers; basically, the U.S. position was that the Canadian government was subsidizing its lumber industry, which is illegal under NAFTA; therefore, the U.S. imposed/collected heavy tariffs on imported Canadian lumber for all this time. However, repeated trade agreement tribunals, WTO inspectors, as well as various legal courts on both sides have repeatedly ruled that this is not the case, and judged in Canada's favour. This of course went on and on, ad nauseum. Up to earlier this year, the U.S. had collected $5 Billion worth of tariffs, which the Canucks were asking to get back. Finally, shortly after Stepehn Harper was elected, George Bush said "Enough. Settle this. NOW."

A deal was reached, whereby the U.S. would refund $4 billion, and keep a billion, to cover their own legal costs (which never should have been incurred in the first place, but oh well).

So streamlined, if you're still reading, I absolutely give GWB the majority of credit on this ONE thing. He could have very easily said "Who cares?", but he didn't. He put an end to it, and simply did the right thing. The only ones who were pissed off, were the U.S. lumber lobby/industry, who now have lost their monopoly on selling lumber to the American people, and being able to charge them whatever they want. Now the people have a choice. In other words....competition.

So, kudos to Georgie-Boy.

And I doubt very much if you'll EVAH hear that come across my keyboard again.

C - Well why not refund the money, he has been printing so much money that by the time you cash that check the US/Canada currency difference will be 20 percent.

It's easy for billionaires to make decisions with taxpayer money.
20%, Podster?

Jeez....I think if our dollar ever reached $1.20 U.S., even I WOULD start shitting bricks. While that may sound good on the surface for us, that would mean that an implosion of the whole U.S. economy is imminent, and the huge whirlpool that it would create, would suck us down as well.

$1.20??

I hope not.

Not at ALL.
Well, DEAH Canuck~

I don't know much about the U.S. refund policy (I'm sure it is much more strict than Wal-Mart's), however, I have yet to hear anything about Canada receiving a check with "Department of the U.S. Treasury" stamped in the left hand corner. And if they DID receive such a check... my advice to Canada?

Well, they could probably give it to the Raptors, cuz it would make a fantastic basketball because of the great BOOOOOOOUUUNNCCE!

That is of course unless the U.S. is cutting it's check's these days via the Bank of Saudi Arabia.
Nahhh.

The cheque will be good; the U.S. still has a very powerful economic infrastructure, although the "R" word is starting to crop up more frequently these days.

However, the White Houses' continued reliance/support/dependency on a theological dictatorship like the Saudi government, bugs the ever-lovin' shit outta me. And do you know what the sad part is? When it comes to the minority of Americans who occupy the far-right, Republican domain (or, the 29%'s, as I call them), they have no problem in spewing the nastiest, mean-spirited, hate-fueled vitriol at Canada (Canada! Fer Chrissakes!)....and YET.....they say precious little, if nothing, towards the Saudis; you know, the fine folks who spawned 15 of the 19 hijackers on 9/11 (and who as a whole, have done NOTHING to stop breeding extremists like they have, for the 30 or 40 years); the fun, friendly folks who hold public beheadings for the minorest of criminal offences; the jovial bunch who have a system in place to make sure women know THEIR place (i.e. they're dirt, and subserviant); the rascally bunch who shun the thought of anything resembling a full-fledged "democracy", etc, etc, etc, etc-fucking-cetera.

And the far-right Republican-talking heads will have NO problem, in launching a tirade of venom.....at Canada.

Kinda sounds like that Michael Moore movie, "Canadian Bacon", don't it?

Anyways, thank Gawd for one thing:

29%.

And with any luck........it'll get smaller (which I think it will).
Note to freeskier: I was going over old videos and stumbled over your comment on the (kid going through the slide) one. Your post was good as far as I'm concerned....I'm just gonna brush the nasties off your coat now....there, I hope you feel better.
Ok, not sure about the "Canadian Bacon" reference. I'll put that one on the "must see" list.

Not much of a market for movies with that title down here... if you know what I mean.

That sad fact is, that many of my southern brethren STILL tote the "Canada is BAAAD" mantra.

Socialized medicine-pot smokin-polar bear eatin-suns-a-bitches!

It's sad, but the most common thing people know about Canada is that it's due North. Beyond that, they don't care.

It's quiet disheartening because at some point... we're going to NEED Canada... I mean really need them.

And Canada of course, will be there.

However, I completely understand what you're saying about the Saudi's. What you must understand, Canuck, is that the U.S. tends to buddy up where the money is... and the opportunity.

Unfortunately, the U.S. Government hasn't realized that everything they get and need from the Saudi's, they could get from Canada. Further to that, their actions in that regard create a persona that we are better friends with the Saudi's than the Canadians... and this simply is not true.

The government has made a practice of creating false perceptions. It's not just this administration, but many before it as well.

It frustrates many of us as well.

Just kind of surprised to hear that kind of....how would I describe it?....."liberalness"? "Open-mindedness"? ........from that part of the U.S.

Mostly because I have the impression they can be quite, shall we say, "rigid" in their views, whether it involved politics or religion or even the dreaded "S"-thingy.

Passed through there (the eastern part) a few times, though.

Seems like nice country.

LOL!

Actually, there are a few of us out here, though I wouldn't term it as 'liberal' or 'open-mindedness'... more as common sense. I think it's merely a matter of choosing to have your eyes open.

I love my country, but I'm not blind to it's faults.

If you've only been to the eastern part than you're truly missing a whole other experience.

There's a lot to be said for the eastern seaboard, however, if you can get past the stain of our history... the south can be hospitable and inviting.

Warm nights, the purr of cicada's at dusk, etc.

Besides, where else can you marry your sister and still be thought of as an upstanding citizen?

BTW...

I thought Canucks hated Detroit?
LLOLOL!!

They do. And I hate them now, more than ever.

Red Wings are great.

I have to do this, because I lost a bet with usedouchebag, on these threads (they beat the Toronto Maple Leafs), and now have to include that pissin', phukin' thing everytime I post on here, for 30 days.

Plus, my wife's from Missouri, so yes, I've already experienced the "warm nights, cicada's", etc; Shit, I even got my first taste of biscuits-and-gravy there, and loved it! LOL!

So, I am very familiar with "southern hospitality", and it's very genuine. Still, I just wish some of the folks down yonder wouldn't be so...."rigid", like I said.

Other than that, no complaints here.

Actually randalflagg,

You are for the most part correct, but there were sects in Kentucky and Missouri that did and were avidly Conferderate.

The 3rd Battalion Kentucky Mounted Rifles [also called 1st or 10th Battalion] was organized during the late summer of 1862. The unit served in the Department of East Tennessee, and later in the Department of Western Virginia and East Tennessee. It skirmished in various conflicts in Tennessee, Kentucky, and Virginia, then surrendered at Bowling Green, Kentucky, in April, 1865.

And also, being a state of Southern traditions with its major cultural, family, and social heritage having come from Virginia, Kentucky nevertheless knew a tremendous love for the old union and was the last to give up hope for a compromise in the Clay tradition. When faced with the inevitability of choice, however, the Kentuckian probably more than any other American made his choice individually, regardless of the sympathies and proclivities of others in his family or section. This independence of thought accounts for Kentucky being the paramount example among the Border States of the Upper South where the family was severed, and brother fought against brother and father against son.

It was quite difficult for most Kentuckians.

yes, randal... phil's my brother!

A "self-named itinerate with too much time on his hands"???

THAT was kind of harsh, wasn't it?

And I had this same conversation with my in-laws: The only folks who think "Canuck" is a derogatory term seem to be Americans; I don't find it in the least offensive. Think about it: we have a hockey team called "Vancouver Canucks"; we used to have a comic book hero years ago called "Captain Canuck" (no shit!); as well as another character called "Johnny Canuck".

I'd say it's about on par with an American being called a "Yank", so I dunno.

Is THAT offensive? I always thought no (well, depending on what state you live in...LOL)
