I've seen embarrassing people everywhere I've traveled, you ever see the Germans in a lift line? English at a soccer game? Poles jumping out of cellar windows?
I used to think jerry lewis was embarrassing , Yet the French thought him to be the funniest man in the business! So maybe you should take your question to the ....French??
Loved Jerry Lewis as a kid. Man was a comic genius.
Know what the sad part is?
Come the day he passes on, everyone's gonna come out of the woodwork (in the U.S. and Canada) and say the same thing.......but he had to get that kind of fame NOW in France, in another country. Now THAT is the real frakkin' crime.
My personal favourites that he did was "Way, Way Out", "The Patsy" and "The Family Jewels".
Plus, I think his career took off after he ditched Martin.
Oh Canuck, I used to love Jerry Lewis. Haven't seen him in years though. I think everyone just identifies him with the telethons now mostly. He's done a lot of good things over the years, and I've seen people makes jokes about him for it. What the hell? He has a lot of caring and passion in him to do what he's done for MD sufferers. He didn't have to. Yeah, he was cheesy sometimes, and slapstick, but he did it well!
I like this vid a little bit. They were just having fun. I thought it was kind of cute.

When I was young, watching Jerry (who was almost always with dean) did embarrass me, and I don't know why ??
His comedy was almost borderline retarded (lucille Ball as well)??? I'm truly puzzled why I felt that way? As I got older I saw jerry in "The King of Comedy" with De niro Thus seeing him act in a black comedy, finding him very talented as an actor in fact! As far as lucy and jerry go I can actually say you are right!!
Also it was early in the am when I posted that and my tank was empty. Someone took a shot at my country and I was feeling Patriotic, so I through Jerry under the bus to make a invalid point(sorry J)
anyhoo with that behind us all My favorite in that genres would be Danny Kaye in The Kid from Brooklyn and the court Jester! Funny stuff
I agree 100% with your points about his charity work, as well.
Considering the current crop of celebrities and their antics, he really does put them all to shame, in terms of something he's consistantly done for the last quarter-century (maybe longer).
Funny how he's not gotten any recognition from Washington for it; you know, like some of these actors/celebrities who've gotten "Medals Of Freedom", etc.
I just remembered a story I read about him, a long time ago.
When he and Dean Martin started up their nightclub act, one of the first bigshots to see them, was Frank Sinatra. After the act was over, one of Old Blue Eyes' friends asked him what he thought.
He said:

And for information Diego is a racial slur you fat pig. A little history Diego is a spanish name that became popular in Italy (during the large migration period to the US). Where it was then used as a RACIAL slur towards Italians or WOPS (with out papers).

I wish the newscasters in my area were that much fun to watch
not a lot of talent there, but fun and entertaining none-the-less
would actually make watching the news a little more bearable
