Captain Avranas and several of his crew were charged, but I hear he's still in command of cruse ships. He claims he was first off the ship to coordinate the rescue from the helicopters... The South Africa press all but hung the man, but he pretty much got a slap on the wrist.
Oceanos was French built and Greek owned. The Captain was Yiannis Avranas. The passengers reported that the crew including the steely-eyed skipper had definitely panicked and abandoned them, even leaving the lower deck portholes open. Avranas later said he had gone ashore to set up the communications (as you do), and in fact it was he who had supervised the whole rescue from the chopper hovering over the sinking ship. Good man! I understand he was never punished for his actions, and that he is still working as a cruise ship captain.
There's footage somewhere of a bulk carrier (I think it may have been taken using FLIR by either US or Canadian coastguard) which literally gets swallowed in one by an enourmous wave.
The coastguard were overflying the ship as it was stormy seas and they were checking on the vessel's condition.
The wave starts at the bow and just advances up the ship completely submerging it in one go. Completely scary
The whole idea of the captain going down with the ship seems outdated. What good does he do on the bottom of the ocean? He should be the one coordinating the rescue. The crew, on the other hand, should stick around to help the passengers. It comes with the territory of working on a cruise ship. If you don't like it work on land.
You'd think they would try to figure out a way to make lifeboats so that they can still be used no matter what. "Oh here, we have some lifeboats, but they're practically useless if the ship is actually having problems that require them."
Reminder to self - carry a sharp knife when taking a cruise in shark infested waters. In case of emergency slice a few passengers then push them in. Maybe the sharks will be full by the time the ship goes down and will be safe for a bit longer.
when on a cruise always travel as a women or child, that means 24/7 shaving and always seduce the captain at dinner while the irish working class riverdance in the lower decks.
I'd heard about this many times, but this is the first time I've ever seen the video. It came as no surprise, since we sailed on this ship in the Greek islands in 1984, and it was really a "tub" then. Amazingly, Epirotiki is still operating a fleet of very old, very poorly maintained ships around the islands to this day. It sure makes me appreciate all our stringent Coast Guard regulations and inspections on cruise ships sailing in U.S. ports. To all those looking for cheap cruises around the Greek islands, my only advice is to be sure you're a very good swimmer!
