nitrous oxide (whippets, etc. ) has a similar effect but less dramatic effect on voice.
I'm not sure i buy the "filters out the high frequencies" explanation. I think its just as likely that denser molecules simply vibrate slower. The inverse property of helium has several uses in medicine.
