I must be desperate for my Glumbert fix, I laughed. But only when he took a stick to the lantern! (I think it was a lantern he whacked). Ugh. I need a life.
Good luck to you vaginasmeller.
webx3u - there is a community in Northern Territory about five miles outside Cairns which espouses much of the Amish philosophy. They are called Martists or something like that. They originated in Sweden and wear very similar clothes to the Amish, ride around in carts and keep themselves to themselves. Occasionally, they head into town to victual up. They are generally well-liked and respected.
I came across a couple of them on a lonely road back in 2001 while I was out walking. They were extremely courteous and offered to share some water with me. In the course of our conversation, the man told me he had once been insulted and challenged to fight by a drunk guy outside a bar in Cairns. Now, the drunk had picked a wrong'un, because in a previous life this pacifist had been in some kind of secret service shit in Europe.
He told me: "I said to the man that I did not fight and wanted no trouble, but he kept on and eventually tried to punch me. I caught his hand and used a technique I learned many years ago to make his arm go numb. I told him again that I did not fight, and let him go. He has since become a good friend of ours and visits often to bring us fish and other foods."
I was impressed.
I'll never underestimate the cloaked skills Jacob may possess again. Unfortunately neither of the 2 fellas in the vid were nearly as highly trained. As for sniffing vaginas, it would depend on the time of year.
Sri Lanka? Never been. Why did I think you were in Thailand? Or is there another Columbo there? Thought the Sri Lankan capital was Colombo. You want bad driving, go to Zanzibar. Fucking amazing!
Fair point - think Africa rules on the bad driving stakes. Regards Zanzibar, perhaps the recent ban on women driving whilst wearing the niqab may help lower the death toll? Never good to drive wearing curtains in my view. Pedestrians probably think similarly
Mate of mine was teaching in Ghana - when he asked the taxi drivers why they were going round corners with their eyes closed he was astounded to learn it was because they were afraid of seeing spirits round the next bend.
Driving with their eyes shut protected them.
Had similar experiences in Goa but they simply made prodigious use of the horn to deflect trucks from the windscreen. Swerving was for pansies but the bottom line was 'might is right'. It was a game of motorised chicken
I was drunk all the way from the Dabolim to Candolim but still remember asking how many replacemen horns the driver would get through in year. I passed out before hearing the answer. Must have been a shitload based on the short period of time I was conscious.
Africa rocks. People are still a part of the food chain there, not the top of it. I respect that.
What about Sri Lanka generally? Worth making a trip? Cheap? Interesting? Beaches? I'm going to KL next year for a while and I might make my way back through south India.
Any thoughts?
In honesty I don't know, first time I've been - Colombo seems to have enough of an underbelly to be interesting but from a personal pov for how long it would appeal I'm uncertain.
The taj Samudra is alright and faces the sea. It's hot and sticky but then so is most of asia.
I am told there are some genuinely beautiful places here and the brochures are all pushing tourism hard. Something about the words tamil and tiger may sway people against for the time being or perhaps I'm being unfair.
Maybe it's just the feeling of rife corruption that sets me on edge - more so than other asian countries.
I've not been out of the city so can't tell you much more. Galle is stunning though and apparently worth the trip if the pics I've seen are anything to go by - only about 60 miles away. Won't make it unfortunately
I'd visit - I have no doubt reading about your escapades would be worthwhile!
KL I personally don't like that much by the way - it's like Bangkok but without any of the soul, charm, texture or welcome.
Mind you, guess the same could be said of Singapore but at least there you can console yourself with cheap electronics and cleanliness. What are you going to be doing in KL?
Thanks for that Mako.
I'm going to visit a friend who works for a gas company in KL. I've been told it's just like you say, but what the hell!
Yeah, the good old Tamil Tigers eh? They've been on the go a long time. Not people to mess with I would imagine. I remember being told by an experienced traveller before I went to Afghanistan many years ago that the only phrase you needed to know was "That's a very beautiful gun you have there!" I suppose it's pretty good universal advice.
I can't answer for mako, but Clarke will be a loss to the world of literature. The only cloud is that he was suspected for years of having been involved in child abuse, which is one of the reasons he lived where he did I think.
