The United States is a very powerful nation. It is powerful not only in terms of its military, but also its politics, economic policies and infrastructure therein. Even its culture has the effect of a juggernaut. This is to be expected in a country housing some 370 million people. Canada, on the other hand with around 37 million people total, has a smaller military; while it has its own economic, political and cultural differences, it is of course no where near the size or scope of the United States. Although geographically it is the seond-largest country in the world, some 90% of its population live near or at, the U.S. border, from coast-to-coast. Now, here's my point: given those realities, whatever policies (be they military, economic or cultural) that the United States implements or undertakes, they WILL have a DIRECT effect on...us. For example, if the U.S. spins into a recession, so do we; if it goes into a depression, then so do we; if it starts adjusting its interest rates or adopts new policies with cross-border policies....then we are affected as well. Even if one of the "Big Three" car-making plants goes on strike within the U.S., it's a guarantee that one of its branch plants somewhere in Canada will (at some point) have to shut down production. Currently, Canada and the United States are the two biggest trading and commerce partners in the world. When you have a relationship such as this, obviously an intertwined economy is bound to be the result. Therefore, ANY decisions or policies the United States government carries out with regards to these areas, will have either a direct, or indirect effect on Canada. Guaranteed. So, in light of this situation, yes, I have a DEFINITE interest in whomever is sitting in that Oval Office, and the decisions they make. Take the concept of "war", for instance. It's because the U.S. was attacked, with the President subsequently making the decision for retaliation (and rightfully so in THAT case) that we now find ourselves in Afghanistan; we took a pass on Iraq, thankfully----a sovereign nation, even one with the ties to the colossus to the south that we have, can still do that. Amazingly enough.
Pretty well ALL of the policies that have come out of Bushs mouth, I've listened to, and my first reactions was always "Oh effing great. What's this idiot gonna do to us now?" Sometime ago, some moron on these threads claiming to be a Canadian (can't remember the name), muttered something along the lines about how WE should not be criticizing the Americans, and instead get our "own house in order." I remember what I first thought when I read that: this fool is completely out of touch, uneducated, and even worse, ill-informed. Firstly, I'd LOVE to "get my own house in order", and Lord knows we do, IF the U.S. governemnt would allow us to do that, without enacting any policy that will have a detrimental impact on us. Secondly, criticizing the GOVERNMENT or its members is not the same as criticizing Americans as a WHOLE (how many times have I said THAT?); for anyone to say, that to do so, is indicative of "anti-Americanism" or "bigoted", is basically out of his/her mind. That's the same argument that Cheney tried to play, i.e., if anyone points a finger at me or the President, then they are "unpatriotic", or even "treasonous". He has since stopped, because he realized that sensible folks had stopped buying into it.
So, to sum it all up, given the FACTS of the situation as stated above, it is virtually IMPOSSIBLE to simply turn a blind eye to anything our neighbours' government does stateside, for it ALWAYS, invariably, has an spin-off effect up here. Which, in turn, gives me the LEGITIMATE right to question/criticize and/or otherwise comment upon, the policies of your government-of-the-day.
"Obsession"? Possibly. But given what I've outlined, I think it's justified. "Hate"? For Bush and Cheney? Again...possibly. But "hate" only goes so far, and will accomplish nothing. I would think, in this regard, "fear" would be more appropriate. Fear, because they are both very dishonest, and very blind men (although Cheney, I will say, is far more intelligent than his C-in-C, in a much more malignant sense, whereas Bush, I would say leans more towards simplicity and incompetence). Ok stream, lets see about this. If he is so concerned about US policy then what has Bush done to cause a depression? Ohh wait, there hasn't been a true depression under Bush's leadership, only market corrections in the stock market. Even 9/11 tore the stock market up, but that was not a direct result of Bush. Second, he mentions the Big Three. That has nothing to do with Bush policy. The Big 3 are not doing so well, because they failed to manage themselves properly. They let costs skyrocket and could not control those costs once the popular high profit SUV's fell out of favor. High fuel costs were the reason. High fuel costs are an excuse. SUV's were a trend, and like any other trend eventually fall out favor.
I understand his comments about Canuck economy being dependant upon US economy, but the two examples he listed were not the best examples to provide.

A point of big picture thinking: It takes a long time (3 generation rule) to truly change a country. Take the US, for example. True representative democracy and then a working republic took a long time...generations. No one now seems to think it was an unworthy venture; but, they sure did at the time. (The American Revolution, at best, only had approximately 1/3 support...with the remainder either actively supporting the crown or apathetic.) If a democracy is allowed to grow in the middle East, beyond Israel, much will change. But the gestation period for that democracy is directly dependent on those supporting it.
You also continue to show that your ability to think and reason is limited to what you see on the web. When an organ of the body goes unused, it atrophies. That applies to your brain.
Recently, I read a story about an Alaskan 15 year old who bought an airline ticket to meet someone she connected with on the net. The article took a very "the airlines are responsible" tone. In doing so, they left out some details that helped paint a slightly different picture about the entire situation...like entire and contextual quotes from the parents, background on the girl, etc. I only know there is more to the story because another news service reported the story, but included those details.

Cut-and-paste ONE instance where I said "Bush caused a depression." Go right ahead. WHOMEVER the President is, because of having a co-dependent economy, then whatever policy that person pursues, can either have a beneficial or non-beneficial effect on EVERYTHING. In Bushs specific case, so far the only detriment has been to his own economy. Example: Currently, the Canadian dollar is almost at par with the greenback, mainly because the greenback is on its way to becoming a peso, thanks to a runaway deficit, burdgeoning fiscal debt, a disastrous war costing $12 billion a month, etc. Now, this may work for US now, but when the U.S. economy tanks, then we'll sucked into the whirlpool. And unless OUR government takes steps NOW, to somewhat protect, or buffer THIS economy to keep from being hammered as well, then we're in deep shit. Who knows? Maybe Harper has already taken steps to do just that. I don't know
