I like this style of music can any of the old timers tell me what song or genre it is?

Please.
There was no such thing as "genre" in the 30's, all the music sounded the same. Anyway, it's The Boswell Sisters and the song is "Roll On"

web, wasn't this called swing?, big band w/vocals, my mother called it pop and swing.
You are probably right, just I don't know if it was swing then maybe it was named later. When I think swing/ big band it's more up-beat like Glen Miller. My sources refer to the Boswells as "close harmony" if that's a genre!

Thanks for the answer guys and webx3u sorry about getting "genre" wrong.

I thought that there was more than one type of music even way back then besides stating the obvious like opera, folk, country and western and didn't the negroes have rhythm and blues and jazz?

You're absoulutely right. I was referring to the word "genre" and connecting it to popular music styles.

Actually, the video was entertaining in its revisiting earlier music genres.

This was, I think, late 20's early 30's. I played in a band in the 50's....we did Glen Milleer stuff after he died during WWII ( I think).

Great music, poorly recorded...but close harmony was a characteristic of the pre-WWII generation.
